I'm still very much an amateur to DnD (less than 50 session, to guess, with a majority being over discord). I'm making backup characters because my current campaign is getting dicey. My DM is running DnD 2024 but he lets us pull stuff from 2014 if it hasn't been updated yet.
For a while now I've loved the idea of a Wild Magic Sorcerer, and I've really loved the idea Eladrin even with the added difficulty of roleplaying one. I recently have been having a major itch to run a Cartomancer after reading the newish Deck of Many Things books. The Cartomancer feat isn't a requirement, but I really like the flavor.
My idea for flavor is a some kind of spellcaster who of course has a magic deck of cards that scratches all the itches; its a spell book, spell focus, source of wild magic, tarot deck, source of magic tricks for the sake of the Cartomancer feat, fun trinket for roleplay. I now love the idea of melding this with an Eladrin character and really shooting for the moon. Some Gambit-esque powers where they can use the cards as physical weapons would be a bonus, but my flavoring skills are strong enough where this isn't a hard requirement.
My biggest struggle right now is coming up with a "strong" build for one. Unfortunately, I'm not good at min-maxxing, but I'm always inclined to try. Obvious considerations would be Eladrin race, some amount of Wild Magic Sorcerer, most likely include the Cartomancer feat, and maybe throw in some other class for throwing cards (knives).
Any comments or concerns? Flavor isn't my real question here but I'm never opposed to inspiration.
