Hello there! I’m making my first character and need feedback as im having trouble with deciding her personality and weaknesses. I’ve asked my d&d group but none of their suggestions fit with my character I thought. So I hope you can help me brainstorm and review what I got so far for my first D&D session!
Maesa Wildheart. A Halfling Druid from a small halfling village in the middle of the woods. The Wildheart Boisterous Beastery is her family’s business passed down for generations. They sell all sorts of beasts, including pets, but their main focus is on their breed of giant dogs (A mix of a dire wolf and a dog). Everything was amazing as a child, her pa taught her how to train animals and how to care for them as they ran the shop. They often went out into the forest to check on the wild animals and hunt for their livestock’s meals, but Mae would find that animals would follow her back to the village, often causing quite a stir within the community. Bears and deer and foxes would be at her heel without her knowing until she turned around to find a trail of creatures behind her. She even learnt how to speak to the animals from her Pa! One day though, she woke up in the wee hours of the day to find her pa missing from the kitchen, where he was typically cooking up breakfast. After searching all over the farm and shop, he was nowhere to be found. A group of villagers went out searching for him, and Mae tagged along the cover of the woods, for her mom forbade her to go out in the forest alone. The only traces they found was a few small footprints in the mud and a letter on top of a tree stump with a small leather necklace tied around it. The letter (summarized) read that he left because the Circle of Shepherds called out to him for there was trouble brewing in the north (? Whatever my DM maps out the world I’ll decide where) lands.
8 years later, Mae’s father is still gone, and everyone in the village believes he has passed, even her mother. After teaching her mother how to care for the animals and handle the shop on her own under the premise of wanting to have more time to herself, Mae snuck out after her mother has gone to sleep. With her belongings on her back and the necklace her father left her on her neck, she left to find her father. A few steps behind her, one of the dogs she raised since a pup trails behind. Soon noticing him, Mae shoos him off back to the village. He stays though, for he is a stubborn pup. Mae tells him of all the scary things he will encounter, for the pup is quite a wimp even though he’s the size of a bear, and the pup flinches a bit but still stays. Mae didn’t want to take the dog from her family’s shop, but her love for him overrides her sense of duty and she brought him to her side, scratching his ruffled hair. They both set out to the new world ahead of them to find her father and treck the path ahead of them.
So so yeah this basically turned into a story but I need help with her basic personality from this story. I was thinking her flaw could be that random animals will follow her and it could lead to weird circumstances, but idk.
Thank you if you read this ,and I would love love some suggestions or critiques before my campaign starts!
Do you think she would feel guilty about leaving her mom? Did times get tougher for her and mom when they were left alone? Does she still think the world of her dad or is she angry with him for leaving them?
That's a good question! I think she would definitely feel guilty about leaving her mom. Do you think it would be a good idea to show that through nightmares she has about leaving her village?
I do not think she would be angry moreso inquisitive and worried about why her dad still hasn't come back for she is very loyal and believing of those she loves. It would have been very difficult to run the shop by herself though, so I thought making her a busybody would be a result of that responsibility thrown on her.
I've thought of some more traits for her: "Honest, passionate, stubborn busybody. Impatient. Appears as a common farmer. Loyal." This is what I'm working on rn for the character sheet for the short description of traits.
And flaws: "Animals follow her around, like a magnet, even when she doesn't want them to. Always needs to be working or doing something or gets anxious. Feels guilt about leaving her family and village behind."
Any other feedback is very appreciated! Thank you so much for giving me something to think about MustacheManny!
I think you could show her guilt by having her try to be overly helpful or trusting to what she sees as 'common folk'. Maybe she's doing all this nice stuff to try to make up for her feeling like she abandoned her village
