For my next character I want to play someone who uses stealth and shadow to their advantage. They are extremely good at being the "unseen" force. I'd also like for them to be a magic user.
The Gloom Stalker ranger could be a very good fit for you. They have abilities that allow them to become invisible in darkness when you first take the archetype, which is pretty sweet. Plus, Rangers get spellcasting at level 2-- I'm not sure if you were looking for a full caster, or if a half-caster is okay by you, though.
Another option is a Shadow Sorcerer. One of the best things about the Shadow Sorc I played was the ability to cast Darkness with sorcery points, which would allow you to see in the darkness. It kind of let you act as an assassin in the dark, your enemies unable to see through the magical cover, but you have noooo problem whatsoever. Multiclassing with a rogue (or maybe monk/ranger if you have decent Wisdom) would be solid as well.
If you and the DM are open to homebrew I have a race called the Ajatar who are people who can 'walk in shadows'-- But that's more niche than the above suggestions. ;)
Both way of the shadow monk and gloom stalker ranger are good options. An arcane trickster rouge would also fit your needs. For a race suggestion I recommend a fallen Assimar. For a general backstory you could go with something like you and your celestial parent have had a falling out, causing you to question everything and everyone and recede into the shadows where few others travel, yet still close enough to observe and influence others without the world knowing you are even there.

Race, classes, and backstory ideas?
I'm all ears!

Way of shadow monk. I played mine as a forest gnome which gave me minor illusion as well. It's pretty close to playing a ninja in my opinion.
