So I just made a new character for a new d&d campaign and I wanted to know what y’all think of it. This is a rough background story but I’m proud of it and am very interested to see how this game will play out with my background, how do y’all think it’ll go?
So my character is a teethling from a royal vlad the impailer type family who drink blood and eat flesh as a way for them in their minds to gain the strength and energy from that person. My family is known across the land as the type of family you don’t want to mess with and as being dark and demented and it’s well known that they use brutal torture methods such as impailing their enemy’s alive and putting them up for display around theit castle/ town as a warning for others. My family has always ate flesh and drank blood because of their belief that doing so will give them the strength/energy/power of the person they just ate.My character has always been against this but was forced to follow suite because if not he would be killed. He always planned to leave and escape the town but when he met the love of his life who had the same views as him and got her pregnant he knew he couldn’t until the child was born. When his child was born the mother died and the child was born with a deathly disease that would need godly type magic to heal.My family kidnapped a cleric and kept him prisoner forcing him to use his godly powers to keep my daughter alive but without him healing her once a week the disease will take over and kill her because his cleric powers are just enough to keep her alive but heal her completely. My characters a warrior and fights battles in the name of the family and Years later (when my daughter was 8 After we caught) we fought a battle and had caught prisoners that my family put in chains and was going to be our next meal. One of the prisoners was a female who was nothing more than a healer and posed no harm to us so I ended up telling her how I never wanted this life but was forced into it and told her about how I have to stay to keep my daughter alive and if and when the cleric fully healed her we were going to escape.Someone from my family over heard this and saw me set her free and in retaliation they ended up (unknown to me) killing my daughter and cooking her in a soup that they fed me and didn’t tell me that I was eating my own daughter until it was to late.I ended up killing multiple members of the guard and my family before running away and now I’m on the run from my family and joined a guild and am a good person who is kind and will help anyone in need as a way to repent for my sins. Will my family catch up to me?What will happen if my family catches up to me and finds out about my party finds out about my past? Will they understand why I did what I did or will they turn on me?I guess I’ll have to play to find out
This is a very harrowing background and very dark. It seems a little more involved than necessary. A disease that can't be fully healed that requires kidnapping a cleric seems a bit further than necessary. I might make a suggestion:
Your family has their tradition of eating people to gain their strength, but you disagree (I really like this). You're debating running away but you meet the love of your life and she becomes pregnant. Perhaps it is here that your family discovers your aversion to their way of life, and they kidnap your pregnant love, keeping her locked up until she gives birth. They then kill (and presumably eat, and perhaps force you to eat) the mother, keeping the daughter prisoner as a means to keep your character in line.
I honestly find it more strong of a background if family still survives, so perhaps your character chose to escape, or had to escape for some reason, leaving the daughter behind, and is off adventuring to try and find or gain the power and support to return and save your daughter. This could potentially give your DM stuff to play with, and it would be interesting to see how your daughter has grown under the tutelage and raising of such an evil family. Is she evil like the rest? Or does she take after her father? Does she despise you for leaving, or does she dream of your eventual return to rescue her? (This not only gives the DM hooks to work with, but also can become an entire side quest that if you and the party have grown close enough they may rally behind you in a very rewarding moment of loyalty and togetherness).
And he could still have family chasing him trying to bring him back.
At the very least, I might suggest trimming some of the fluff (the strange disease, the kidnapped cleric, setting the prisoner free). Backgrounds don't need to be too long or involved to be rich and create hooks for a DM to work with.
It is an interesting background, and it's not one I've heard before. Please don't take my suggestions as criticism, I love reading and writing character backgrounds and I thoroughly enjoyed reading yours, thank you for sharing it.
