I am really interested in the haunted one background and am looking to make a character. Would love to see some haunted one characters others have made for inspiration
Well one of my "haunted one" characters is a dwarve fighter that is literally haunted by an ghost Npc
But a haunted one was usually part of some kind of frightening, or scarring experienice. And the memory's still bother them now here in the present.
For example, Ermnir my dwarven fighter and his friend (the ghost but still alive) where trying to rid this town of zombies, they saw much death and decay, and Ermnir even lost his friend to the hordes of zombies. This still scares him to remember those zombies ripping apart the guy and some townsfolk.
And his friend who is haunting him, because he is scared of passing on, is a near constent reminder of that.
So if you have a dungeon master see what in there world could have scared your character for life.
Or you could watch some horror movies for inspiration.
I have a haunted one character I recently made. They're defiantly out of the norm, but maybe something about this will spark some ideas for you?
They're a divine soul tiefling born of two aasimar, her mother essentially pissed off a demon and had her bloodline cursed. They have an angelic guide and a demonic guide. The angelic guide acts as a normal aasimar guide, only in dreams, visions, ect. While their demonic guide often appears during the day time and talks to them quit directly [they can only be seen by my character or by someone with true vision].
I helped one of my players with a Haunted One background for our last campaign. It was a CoS story, so we wanted the gothic flair to it (makes sense since it came with the book). My player as a small child in Vallaki was kidnapped along with his family and sacrificed by the cultists. He managed to escape because of plot magic but was harrowed by the experience ergo haunted one background. The experience with the occult and death led him to become a grave cleric.
My current character was away from his village when it was raided by bandits. He returned just after they left to find his wife murdered and his house on fire with his young daughter in it. He ran into the house to save his daughter (and did), but suffered terrible injuries. He was in a coma for weeks, and his daughter was sent off to live in an orphanage because nobody expected him to live. At one point he died during the coma, and his soul was snatched from the Shadowfel by the Raven Queen. She restored his life, but told him to await her herald who would send him on "tasks."
He has spent the last 8-10 years doing these "tasks" when asked (about once a year) and was granted basic powers (Shadow Sorc) to help complete them. Outside of that he spends his time as a groundskeeper in a cemetery near the city his daughter was adopted into (she is unaware of him, as of the moment). Only one session deep, but super excited about where the story could go with this. Lots of threads our DM can pull to bring out surprise story lines.
I am yet to get the chance to play her but, here she is:
Alice, a young Tiefling who lived her life in the streets after her parents couldn't tolerate that she was a Tiefling... people talk and shame could leave them to ruin and they couldn't afford to kill her so they abandoned her in an another city. Alice wasn't the best thief in the world and the amount of times she was caught were too often and her hunger was too much to handle, that until she found a rather strange being. A humanoid being, standing 8 feet tall but looked bestial in nature. The creature had three hound like skulls with empty eyes that yet feels that it was like an endless abyss that stared right back at her, and the skull is attached with tendons to a contentiously blood ozzing body. Her first instinct was to run... but her body couldn't last longer. The being had it's jaws open devouring blood and flesh which flew from the to it's mouth. The body as it's brutish hand and bone claws that dug through a a dying gentleman's flesh. When it noticed her it stopped and said "Hunger is over coming you little mortal.. neither of us want to die from hunger" he paused as she was slowly backing away "If you flee you'll die from hunger, and that would break my heart..." For some reason her body felt... peaceful... near that being but how ? she didn't know... and before she knew it... she did it... and now she lives her life on horror as she can't stop tasting the forbidden flesh and knowledge of things she didn't know.. memories of those she ate flow within her mind plague her sanity as a strange powers she seem to learn without a teacher, spells... rituals... and much more.... She now lives with that guilt but hides it with a fake smile and happy attitude.
I still can't choose which patron for this character but i'll have when or if i get to play her.

Born under the watch of something from the furthest corners of the far realms.... It knows all.... it sees all... and it asks: "What is it that you want to see?"... and my answer is... ALL"
There is a truth that stands above all other truths, greater than any ideals of good or evil. A dream, desire, any ambitions that mankind can devise cannot be without some form of sacrifice. A lesser being would be willing to sacrifice his time, as if that were some major sacrifice to any of the higher beings. Many would be willing to give up their own freedoms, their own lives. But for me, the promises of power could not be satisfied. So it was, that in the year 1492 I acted, opening the gates to the gnolls and devil-spawn that encroached upon our village. Seeing the carnage that unfolded before me, I forgot the reason why. Why the invaders didn't claim my life also, I will never know, but my guilt will haunt me forever.
" A monster that slaughtered dozens of innocent people spared your life, and you don’t know why. "
