He could be part of a secret order of Blood Hunters whose sole purpose is to wipe out the unnatural in the world. Perhaps recently there has been an overabundance of creatures being sent from Barovia and your order has sent you to investigate and possibly stop this from continuing.
If you go Lycan, you can always fall back on the well-worn trope of Lycans vs Vampires, or at least crib some inspiration from it. If you go Ghost Hunter, you're about as stereotypically perfect for a story like Strahd as any character could be. Throw in the Haunted One background for your character and the reason you're there practically writes itself.
Either option fits the story like a glove and you can have a lot of fun building out the details on an already-solid foundation.

kind of new to D&D looking for some help with a blood hunter backstory that would go with the Curse of Strahd Campaign
This seemed pretty cool. I don't know what a bloodhunter is.
