Mainly asking about chromatic dragons, would they let wild-life live around their lair? and/ or would wild life just by nature avoid the lair of the dragon? and how far of a birth would wildlife give a chromatic dragon? I know the monster manual gives dragons and other monsters 6 mile radius from their lair,
but i would think unless said no wild life would be within that 6 miles. then there would be very few animals living within 50ish miles and after that it would be back to normal wild-life.
The Dragons you're referencing (I think) are smarter than the average lizard. If they turn their immediate surroundings into a killzone up to 50mi, they'll be hard pressed to find a meal without garnering more unwanted attention than they might be able to handle (despite their arrogance).
A smart Dragon wouldn't create so much presence as to cause creatures to give the lair a 50mi berth.
A dumb Dragon won't last long.

No?” will be my epitaph.
well i wouldnt say hunt them up to a 50 mile killzone.
Im trying to figure out how is the best way to signal a dragon/ dragon lair is close by but not have the lair effects take place or have the dragon fly over.
i suppose it also depends on when you're talking and what dragon - they can 'hibernate' long enough that people start believing they're only myth - so at least a couple generations. i'd think if they've been dormant for 20+ years wildlife would be abundant. think smaug, ,or specifically in forgotten realms, that white dragon up in ice peaks (although there you're talking frozen tundra so not much around anyway other than seasonal deer).
some dragons, like that one in waterdeep, eat gems so there'd be plenty of animals around (although not the specific example as he's in a vault.
if i remember correctly, the black in the tunnel halfway to 10 towns is generally sustained by his loot, they don't really get into specifics on exactly how that works - that i can remember.
you'd think the smart ones would allow animals to prosper, both to avoid the obvious 'hey, no wildlife, must be something here' and flying 100+ miles anytime you want a snack would get old fast.
you could do it like signs of a bear but bigger - huge claw marks on stones - trees snapped in half - mudhole with huge dried prints - rumors from the locals in a tavern - or the locals complaining about missing animals - a stray scale here or there (or combine this with broken trees - several broken trees and several scales where it stopped to scratch an itch) - gigantic piles of poop.
Some dragons have "cousins" working for them. Kobolds and the like. No reason they couldn't go out and acquire a stable full of animals for snacks without alerting the wildlife population, other than the sheer terror when the dragon does get out and fly around. And if they have a big enough tunnel, why not have their own herds - they just have to be big enough to produce enough supplies to maintain the dragon. Or even better, a local canyon that can sustain the herd and only has a single point of entry to drive the additions to the herd into.
That was always a neat point of the storytelling in Pern... the constant wariness of feeding the dragon mounts too close to civilization versus the chore of doing it too far away.

what do you all think?
