I'm unfamiliar with the setting and about to join a game set there. I'll be talking to my DM eventually but wanted to get some idea of where about to start. Would any of the monstrous races make sense?
There is a range of races but mostly humans I think. So if you want to be thematic, I'd go for a human or maybe a demi human who could pass for a pure blood.

"The population of Baldur's Gate was always dominated by humans, though other races such as elves, dwarves, and to a lesser extent some drow, settled within the city and were not looked upon differently. The older districts of the Upper City and Lower City were quite diverse, while newer neighborhoods and those of the Outer City saw some homogenization along ethnic and racial lines. While no race was outright banned, more-monstrous humanoids such as trolls, ogres and orcs were a rare sight indeed."

"Many tieflings were also found along the Sword Coast, particularly in the cosmopolitan Baldur's Gate, as well as parts of the Dragon Coast."
Don't forget the kobolds, they pretty much run the sewers.
