I've tangentially followed D&D over the last 20+ years, but only on the periphery. Now that I've got a core group of gamers and a strong desire to DM, I'm trying to figure out our options. Is there an easy place to go to find out information about each of the worlds? I was surprised to not find anything in the DMG at least giving a short overview of the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Eberron, Ravenloft, etc.
It's my understanding that 90% of published material takes place in the Forgotten Realms. For a home campaign, I'm not as concerned about patching the disparate worlds together, but I'm also considering running Adventurer's League content/events and I believe THERE it most definitely matters? I just want to get a good foundational understanding so I can tell my Aasimar from a Gnome in the ground.
If you are looking at running Adventurer's League or a published adventure module the vast majority are set in the Forgotten Realms but you can quite easily port them into any generic fantasy setting. There are a few outliers like Storm Kings Thunder (which is more of a sandbox takes place across the Sword Coast and Icewind Dale and would take rather a lot to alter) and Curse of Strahd (which is Ravenloft).
If your wanting to stay in the Forgotten Realms I would recommend the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide for most of the basic setting information.
