If so, I find each have merit in different ways and fit people differently to make the backgrounds great and less so. It comes down to the player in my opinion.

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
I'm struggling to settle on just one background that I would call coolest... but anything that gives you proficiency with Thieve's Tools is usually pretty helpful.
Obvious answer: background doesn't define the character, so they're all equally cool!
Controversial answer: Folk Hero! What's more classic than the farm boy/girl turned hero? Westley from Princess Bride, Luke Skywalker from Star Wars, and Taran from the Chronicles of Prydain are just a few that spring to mind. Oh yeah, and Robin Hood!
Reading through the PHB backgrounds, I think that Charlatan looks the most interesting, mechanically, and also really cool to play as with the right group. There's a lot you can do with someone who has a reliable false identity they can pull out at key moments, and who can also reliably forge any document they have a decent look at. It's a background feature that's nearly on par with the 9th level Assassin Rogue feature, Infiltration Expertise.
