Hi everyone, so I have a character i've set aside for a while now since our current party are looking to be retiring our characters sometime in the next few months and restarting at level 1 (We are around 12/13 now and will retire at around 15). Being level one it's hard to have the character have a particularly competent background but just wanted to see what people thought of my character's backstory I've written up, just for reference he will be a half/elf and i'm actually torn between being a Rogue (becoming Arcane Rogue at level 3) or a Sorcerer
Gideon Dray, Arcane Investigator at your service. If you have a problem with the occult, the supernatural or the unknown, Gideon will have things fixed up in no time, should you have the coin to pay of course. Gideon was born into a life of mystery and arcane magic, having being the son of a powerful warlock human father and a mystical druid mother. Two heroes famed for their great services to the realm. Growing up in the company of adventurers, every day was a test of his fear and fortitude. Gideon's parents never let their child slow them down. But at the age of 7 after a near-death encounter in a tomb of a once powerful lich, Gideon's parents finally realized that travelling with their only child was too much of a risk to their quests. They decided to leave Gideon in the company of their trusted mentor Merlin Hendfire, a gnomish wizard teacher who promised the parents that Gideon would learn the arts of the arcane so he too could one day become a great hero like his parents, but as days turned to years Merlin learned that Gideon while very much gifted in the arts of understanding magic, struggled to conjure the energy required for spellcasting, Gideon, angry at the slow process, rejected the traditional path of teaching and instead practiced using his knowledge to understand and study magic from an outsider looking in. Merlin while not fully supportive of Gideon's path, realized that Gideon truly had gifts far beyond that of many he had seen at this stage in life, just in ways that Gideon realized.
Many years later Gideon found himself parting with Merlin to make his own name in the world, travelling from city to city solving mysteries for coin. After months of this, business became regular enough that Gideon could make his business official, opening a store in the city of Horus. From freeing restless souls to the next life to uncovering clues on murders in mysterious circumstances, "Gideon's Arcane Investigation and Spectral Sleuthing" became a name that many would turn to for answers. But one day, Gideon's parents went to pay a visit to the humble store. While not disappointed in the path Gideon had chosen, they commended him for not living in their footprints but advised his skills could still be used for far greater use, even if he did not yet possess the ability of spellcasting. Gideon's father Ricoth and his mother Layden both informed Gideon of a dangerous mission they both were about to undertake to defeat a powerful demon Arzgoth, Gideon eager to accompany them pledged he would not hold them back, but with business at an all-time high, after a night of revelation, Gideon took what his parents said to heart and decided that though the path he had chosen wasn’t what his parents expected, it was the path he walked on his own terms. The next morning he informed his parents of his decision, though confessable disappointed, the parents gave him their blessing and once again commended Gideon for being true to himself, vowing they would both return once the mission was done. That was 3 years ago.
