So I am running a conversion of the old 2e modules into a 5e format, for the most part this isn't all that difficult.
However, there is some hard limits I'm running up against and am having difficulty fitting things in. Specifically, Tieflings as a playable race. We have a total of 2 now, as far as I can glean from the material on hand, Tieflings only appeared after the Chaos war from souls of Krynn's inhabitants that were slain by chaos demons that then manifested as fully grown tieflings. The time period I'm running is 348 AC which is the, "return" of the gods and the War of the Lance. So that bit of lore doesn't help.
For our first tielfling sorcerer I came up with the idea that he was a magical experiment, I was thinking of the Reincarnate spell.
Then we had a guest player show up and he wanted to be a tiefling too, now I have to explain how there are tieflings on the continent of Ansalon and I have nothing. Since he was a new player who had no backstory, background or any type of origin story I told him he had amnesia, and we will go from there. Having both of these characters be the result of magical experimentation would be convenient, but seems a bit lacking. Any ideas or is there source material that explains them that I'm not seeing?

Future Krynn? If I remember correctly the "River of Time" was a feature of the Raistlin/Fistandantilus story.
Edit: Also helpful in explaining how the guest player pops in and out of the story (if they do).
That fits, thanks!
