Ok, I currently have a Earth Genasi Druid, Sage-Researcher background Circle of Land-Forest; neutral/neutral good alignment named Rosa de Fer (meaning iron rose)
In my head-cannon, my character is from the Elemental Planes as her mother was a Dao and father was some kind of humanoid. She is very socially awkward, obsessed with knowledge and does not feel 'part of this world' all the time.
Now, with her being an Earth Genasi with a Dao mother, I have her collect rocks and stones that she keeps as they comfort her and make her feel in touch with her true element. This being said, I have some issues with how Druids are not supposed to like metal. My character physical appearance is Iron like skin with rust patterns, coal like eyes and what looks like rusty petals for hair. Now, Dao are known for jewelry, stones and being adorned with riches. Now, my character does not care for things material (afterall, she would have grown up as a slave to her mother) but the idea of her not liking or using metals doesn't make since to me. I could see more about using WORKED metals as being an issue, but what about raw materials/minerals? I don't think my character would find it difficult to commune with nature because of wearing or using metal as she sees this as part of the Earth Element. To me, my character would not have an aversion to it as it is part of Earth.
So, with Spiked armor, it has that it is USUALLY made with metal spikes, but that means that there is room for other materials. I think my character would instead spike it with rocks, gems, and raw materials as these have meaning to her.
Overall, I don't think my character would have issues with metal because of her heritage but what would be some reasons she wouldn't? Right now she uses a shield made of wood, has a bone dagger, and has a scimitar. (And I know most are going to say ask the DM, but we don't always have the same DM every week)
The PHB says that they typically don't wear metal armour. That doesn't mean they can't. Many people ask about this. The answer is: yes, they can wear metal. Considering the background, I would say yes. But you could change it so that you only use raw materials. Not alloys. So that it is more natural.

The OP asked about Adventurer's League. If a Druid wore metal armor in AL, you can expect there to be trouble.
Narratively: you can describe your Druid as wearing whatever you wish.
Mechanically: use the stats for Hide armor or below. You can still describe is as you like, but the armor restriction is there for play balance. Try to game that, and you'll almost certainly get called out in AL.
