i need help coming up with reasons why my character would go visit her (adoptive) dad. i had some ideas a few weeks back, but I've been stressed with everything going on and my mind is going blank. she is also my first character.
for background, my character deej is dragon born but she doesn't know it yet, she was adopted by a lizardfolk named koltar. koltar was a dock worker in a major city, ,and raised deej on the docks working with him. koltar is retired now and is settled down in that city, deej is part of a guild of monster hunters now, and she sends gold to koltar to pay his rent and support him the best she can.
in our campaign, the jobs weve been taking from the board in the guild hall have been getting significantly more dangerous. we ran into a dragon that was in hiding in a cove, and was friendly to us, but gave up its hiding place to protect us from some nasty bandits a bit later. in the world were in dragons are super rare, and generally hated because of a war against dragons and their riders that happened a century before. so now there are some dragon slayers that entered our town(2 days north of where koltar is)and they're trying to get info about the dragon, who we are trying to protect. we decide to go visit deejs dad(koltar) because i initially had a little story planned out for when we got there, and on the way check the cove to see if the dragon was ok.
i know deej is homesick, and she wants to check in on her dad because he is getting old(koltar is in his late 50s, lizard folk only live to about 60), also now shes worried with all of this talk of dragons being around, and the apparent resurgence of riders. the party wanted to get out of the northern town because of the dragon slayers, i also know deej wants to show the party the docks and the town because its where she grew up, she also has a mentor that used to work on a ship that would dock often, hes a yuan-ti thats around 70(100 year lifespan) so i havent thought about if hes settled down and retired, or if hes still working. also they might do shopping because this town is significantly bigger.
im just struggling at coming up with things to do while were there, and reasons why they're there.
Maybe you run into a traveling merchant coming from your hometown that brings news of increased monster attacks because "lesser" monsters are being driven out of their normal hunting grounds due to the resurgence of dragons. This could prompt you to suggest that the party visits your hometown to take advantage of the plethora of hunts as well as visit your adoptive father. Then you could have your true identity revealed and start having to balance the increased dangers of hunting monsters for pay vs. potentially being hunted yourself (I assume since people don't like dragons they don't like dragonborn either).

Have an idea for a great character, but no clue how to get started writing a backstory? Let me help! Check out www.rent-a-bard.com for more.
Maybe you character is having unusual feelings/pains and can't understand what is happening and desires to go see her "father" to see if he can share more of her story with her about how and where she was found.
