So, the new spelljammer book left the D&D cosmography kind of open to the DM and that makes sense. Before it was released, I tried to do some lore research on spelljammer and something I want to know is what happened to the phlogiston? Does it still exist? Is that just something phased out in 5e? Did I miss something in the book that talked about that? I guess it would make sense to take out, but I thought it added an interesting extra sense of life or death danger for magical space travel.
That is a bold move since most fiction they allowed had phlogiston in the story, for those that remember this was the lifeblood of the universe. In my opinion it was a beautiful way of trying to link old Alchemy lore with natural space phenomena which scientist still can't fully describe. It added a nice thrill of danger and excitement to space, and gave us some realness to the dangers of fire in space. I would have kept this part of the lore as it was something we planned for in old Spelljammer games. **How do you present safe light source in a space filled with flammable gas? How can daring space farers use it to their advantage when being chased by a death spider?.... If we can't have a vacuum in space, this was at least a manageable danger. But also this helped at least explain how you could travel space for 100's of light years in a mater of months between crystal spheres.
I do find it disheartening that some of the changes do seem aimed at players who complain about dieing and crave diversity in a game that is fully saturated in diversity.
was removed in 4th Edition, and not brought back in 5th. It was an Idea... not sure if good or not, but it was a thing, but many people didn't like the mechanics of it, and the over simplification of 5th means it was erased completely. I'm more upset about the Crystal Spheres than the Phlogiston, as my house setting used the Sphere as a way to cut off the setting from all other D&D settings and gods, which was a big thing you could do in the old rules, but now, not so much.

You can still do Crystal Spheres in 5e Spelljammer. There is an example of one in the adventure (it was created by the Primordials of a Wildspace System to keep out the gods).

I am not sure what my Spirit Animal is. But whatever that thing is, I am pretty sure it has rabies!
Diversity is a good thing. And death shouldn’t be super common, especially at low levels, or it will discourage new players from joining.
I consider everything that Spelljammer book says about the Astral to be non-canon.
