I'm trying to make an item that shows like the flow of magic through out things as kind of an improved detect magic spell. Like a magic pair of goggles or something like that. And I'm trying to figure out how it would see different classes that use magic u tell me what u think:
Intelligence classes like Wizards and Artificers have a faint residue of magic on their hands, as they have more of a “hands on” approach to using magic so to speak, their hands become stained with it. (Think like magic cheeto dust) Those with innate magic like sorcerers have what looks like a knot or a node of magical strings and lines in their core or abdomen. Warlocks, Paladins, and Clerics have some sort of glowing orb near their heart with a floating tether that fades off after a few inches to represent their connection to their god, patron, or other being of worship, though warlocks’ lines are much thinner because their power comes more from an arrangement, or personal knowledge than faith. Bards, who’s magic comes from their heart, but is controlled by their songs, have a small pinpoint also where their heart would lie, and what looks like strings that lead to their fingers, or up into their throat. Druids and Rangers who’s magic comes from their connection to the world around them have what looks like roots spreading out from their core and into their body.
All lights seem to be more of a dim glow when the character is not using magic, but when a spell is cast, energy can be seen flowing from the player's magic source into the air to form the spell.
Of course these would all be more loosely based for characters with specific backstories and such. And of course more powerful spellcasters have bigger and brighter magic lights within them. As do full casters have bigger and brighter lights than half casters (Clerics have more magic than paladins, druids have more than rangers, ect.)
Let me know what you all think or if you have any suggestions
There was a story where a musician was able to visualize a massive webwork of ley-lines throughout the world and create a resonance with the ones the musician wanted to manipulate.
The story went further in that the musician was also able to directly manipulate the ley-lines as if they were strings - strumming/plucking, but also weaving, knotting, unknotting... but never cutting.
The story was that the musician was the infant child of an evil sorcerer that almost took over the world with a dragon army. So a wizard swapped the "innocent" with an infant from a world of technology as there had to be a balance of life to transport someone between existences. The changeling in the magic world grew up to become a technological tyrant and the wizard sacrificed himself to bring the now-adult sorcerous changeling back to his home existence in hopes of defeating the mechanical monstrosities conquering the world. Imagine an army of dragons freed from the tangles of ley-lines that bound them to the sorcerer fighting hordes of warmachines of all kinds - self-driving tanks, gliders, automatons, etc.
