DnD's Hobgoblins are a race of discipline honorable warriors. Anyone who likes Disney's Mandalorian would understand the appeal of hobs as a race, but the current writing doesn't really support them as a player race. This comes from them being meant to be a tougher enemy for earlier editions. So, like the stoic Mandalorian I tried my hand at rewriting it myself.
Here I have to explain what stoicism is. the four tenets are wisdom, courage, justice and moderation. Stoic training focuses on the ability to step back from your emotions and make calm rational descensions. And is not about being emotionless or distant but about see the world from a clear perspective.
First, lets take a look at their gods. Nomog-Geaya is a god that is stoic, courage, cold blooded and is tyrannical. Bargrivyek is known as a peacemaker that is concerned with justice, unity and territory. Khurgorbaeyag is the hob god of oppression and social order.
Second, I took each of the gods and tweaked their domains a bit. Nomog-Geaya (the king) I gave an aspect of growth and dumped cold blooded because it clashes with stoic philosophy. I see this as the god that seeks challenges and trials for personal growth. His hob fallowers would be monks, war clerics and fighters.
Bargrivyek (peacemaker) I replaced territory with travel and untraded paths. In combination of travel, exploration, co-operation and justice, makes for very interesting god that wish unite the other races and bring justice. Hob fallowers would be your bards, rangers, inquisitive rogues and vengeance paladins.
Khurgorbaeyag (taskmaster) I change oppression for domination and added invention. This god is usually associated with slavery. It is in my mind that slavery impedes the growth of the society. So, I replaced it with inventing. My thinking is that he is some where trying to make flawless armors, weapons and spells to his exacting standards but always finds a flaw. Hob fallowers would forge clerics, artificers and wizards
Thirdly, the tyrannical aspect of hobs, imagen that all your friends and allies were just butchered and you are left to pick up the pieces. you to mite choose to bash heads together to get people to fallow and gather as much power as possible to keep that from happening again. They are a race that is oppressed by Maglubiyet. It is not outside the realms of possibility that the king has bided his time waiting for the right moment to free his people from Maglubiyet.
Inconclusion, Hobs as they stand are a race that individually develop deep ties to their banners. They just required some help out the door. mixing in a drive for self improvement, invention and traveling makes them natural adventures, for after all "This is the way"
Yeah. And, anyone who says Mando's are stupid, well...... They are right, but they are still awesome, and I will attack you.

Define stupid, Mandos are honestly crazy successful as a culture when you think about it. They literally can endure almost any hardship and aren't shallow when it comes to races.
For the last time, Mandos AREN'T a race, but a belief and creed.

I'm sorry to introduce the "Trek vs Wars" argument into this thread, but if we're going to compare hobgoblins to someone I would have picked the Cardassians.

Well, since you brought up Trek, Klingons are the race exclusive versions of the Mandolorians. I think they would get along and team up to go kill things.

I would agree. The high value placed on honor, family, political unity, and harsh punishment fit pretty well with hobgoblins.
I'm not sure what you mean by Hobgoblins are messed up. Are you saying that the description of Hobgoblins in the MM doesn't match the Lore you wish they adhered to? Like conforming to the Mandolorian?

I'm not really sure how they came up with the original writing, but what I mean is that Hobgoblins makes them dysfunctional to really be taken as a threat. In particular how they are described as stoic. There are two different types of stoics in the world those who practice the philosophy and those of quite and bitter anger who think their not acting to resolve that anger makes them stronger. I think the original writers had them as the latter.

Yes, or more specifically, a group of people from the planet Mandalore, who have a specific culture, and serve their overlord, who's also called Mandalore.

I like this. Being stoic (or watching someone else try to be stoic) can be really cool.
Anyway. That being said, what alignment do you think hobgoblins are? The four tenets of stoicism as practiced by Marcus Aurelius don’t really go with lawful evil.
Well, again, I've always considered the concept of alignment to be a bit wonky. So much depends on one's perspective, after all. I would say that most hobgoblins would consider themselves to be lawful neutral. But the humans and other humanoid groups living near those hobgoblins may consider them to be lawful-very-evil. After all, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

I totally agree with you about alignment. But if I had to pick one for the OP’s interpretation of hobgoblins, I would also go with lawful neutral.

lawful neutral, and true neutral. I personally find this system to be rather cumbersome and dysfunctional. I personally prefer the question of Righteous or Wicked. Defining Righteous as Functional and Selfless and Wicked as Dysfunctional and Selfish. Not the like the more common ideas of does do harm or doesn't.

I like it. But you can be dysfunctional without being selfish, and vice versa.

Mandalorians are not a race. They are a creed. If you wanted to go with the Mandalorian from the TV show, I would go for variant human.
