Session 16: Star Struck
An early warning from Kalisius allows Evern to prevent a fall into a pit trap, as enemies surround them. The gang engages in battle with Zhentarim guised as City Guard, with Warren taking the first shot. Evern is able to escape the pit trap and pursues the false Captain Terrik into the guard post. As she engages the captain and mage alone, Warren makes quick work of one of the guards shooting from above. Kalisius weakens the guard captain and one of the bowmen. Afterwards, CJ and Warren remove the bowman, followed by CJ ripping the throat from the mage.
With the battle well in hand, the PBC gang up and whittle down the Zhent leader. Fueled by the anger of lost comrades and fear of his boss’s wrath the Zhent puts up a heated effort, but eventually surrenders. He is then questioned by Crawford in thieves cant, revealing their reason for being at the encampment. They were sent to prevent anyone on learning what the monk knew of their plans. Evern tied him up and left him, as the group goes to check to ensure the monk’s safety.
The monk, an ornery old man named Hlam, is more concerned with being bothered than what conspired outside of his cave. He reveals that something is blocking his vision, but he is able to determine one thing: “Evil’s twin hides its face for now. Expect that to change before Winter’s End.” Kalisius, Evern, and Cin each ask the monk personal questions that he answers in a cryptid manner. Kalisius learns his daughters will soon come looking for him, Cin learns of a curse on her family and eyes on her in the city, and Evern is told to trust her judgement and in Tyr.
Evern uses the Sending Stone to report back to the Blackstaff, and reinforcements are sent to the guard post. Upon returning to the guard post, they realize that the Zhent captain had escaped. They decide to rest at the encampment for the night. During Cin’s watch in the middle of the night, she hears the sound of battle come from the gorge miles below. Waking Crawford, they see a line of torches approaching from below. They have a heart to heart as they wait for the guards to approach. The guards inform them of a scuffle with the escaped bandit that resulted in the loss of 3 of their men. The group is relieved of duty, and return to the city below.
The gang wakes up on an icy winter morning in Waterdeep. Kalisius seems to wake in a reflective mood, as he apologizes to Warren for lying about the fountain and speaks with Cin about his family. After their discussion, Cin fixes a wonderful breakfast. They find a note from Evern saying she has gone to temple for the morning. At the temple, Evern reflects upon her devotion to Tyr she sets an appointment with the “father” for her Oath Ceremony. They reconvene at Trollskull Manor, before heading out to begin their job for Davil.
They arrive at Weirdbottle’s Concoctions and find the ornery Skeemo working on something in the back. Evern retrieves the bag from him, before he and Kalisius have a war of words. They leave the shop with parcel in hand. Kalisius attempts to find a patsy to try the potions and see what they are. He calls over a roughly dressed Halfling, who Cin immediately recognized as shrouded in some illusion. They do not push the matter and move on toward the Godcatcher. On their way, they run into a street that is closed due to too much ice on the road. They cut off into a back alley, where they are intercepted by the vagabond Halfling. As Kalisius attempts to rally the group, the ambush is sprung.
The halfling drops its guise to reveal a kobold sorcery, while two Bugbears pull themselves from the sewers. The battle begins in earnest, as Warren and Crawford take shots at their new foes. Kalisius lands a spell against the chief that cause it to temporarily turn on its ally. It does not prevent Evern from being charmed by the Kobold, as a second Kobold reveals itself as it fires a bolt at Warren. Crawford prevents Evern from handing over the pouch to their new friend by slaying it.
The battle becomes fierce as Kalisius is knocked unconscious followed by Evern and later Warren. Things begin to look dour, as Kalisius regains consciousness. He takes the from Evern and attempts to lure the assailants away. They take the bait but fall before they can reach him. Guards rally to the seen, as the last remaining bugbear is felled, but one of the Kobolds slips away. He does not make it far, however, as Crawford gives catches up with ease. The guards come to secure the scene, as the party readies to deal with the fallout of the fight.
With the battle over, the gang is left to deal with the aftermath. Crawford was able to wrangle the last of the kobolds to the ground as the guards take the scene. Kalisius convinces them that he was an injured bystander, but Crawford and the Kobold are put in chains and returned to the group. Evern converses with the guard and is told the situation looks dire for them. The group does not resist and wait for the guard captain to arrive. Captain Staget first checks to ensure Kalisius is alright. He calls for a medic to tend to him then heads to the rest of the group. Evern explains the situation to him, as he interrogates the gang. He digs for more information and Evern lies, saying the were on mission for Lady Gralhund. He reveals that he was to let them go by order of the Blackstaff, but would be following up with the Lady Gralhund. They are seen by the medic but heal their own wounds, and are escorted from the dock wards.
They head to the God Catcher to complete their delivery. As they approach, Kalisius trips and causes a scene. Evern intercedes and the guards don’t bother them further. They then approach the lady in her carriage. Esvele Rosznar accepts pays them for the services, and gives a little extra for their troubles. Kalisius attempts to hold out for more, but is persuaded by Evern (sacrificing her own bonus) to let it go. As Esvele’s carriage fades from sight, Kalisius messages her a warning to no response. The gang then shops for better armor then returns to the Lif’ting Spirits. Sat at a table awaiting their arrival is Davil Starsong. He debriefs the gang before they are joined by Renaer looking to speak privately with Crawford. Crawford follows him to the study, while the rest of the gang exchanges gossip with Davil. Renaer scolds Crawford on his dealings with the Blackstaff, before awarding him a promotion for their completed tasks. They then join the rest of the gang, and receive a new assignment. They are to meet with Jalester SIlvermane about a disturbance at the City of the Dead. Davil and Neverember leave the group to prepare for their next assignment.
Session 19: Oaths and Orphans
An early morning for the PBC, as they head to the Castle Ward and the Halls of Justice. There, friends and family gathered for Evern to bare witness to the young paladins Oath. The priest of Tyr led her through the brief ceremony, and, once her oath was taken, a small reception was held. Billie and Millie Tesper presented their daughter with the family sword, and Renear, Floon, and Volo provided her with a new sheathe. Crawford snuck away to procure some items, while Evern questioned her parents on the reputation of certain nobles.
With the ceremony completed the gang reunited at the Yawning Portal. They met with Jalester Silvermane and a cantankerous old cleric, Sir Ambrose Everdawn. Silvermane requests their assistance with a body snatcher running rampant in the City of the Dead. Sir Ambrose was less keen to the idea but was swayed by the words of Crawford. They are told they will be paid 42 gold per night spent, with a 100-gold bonus for apprehending the culprit(s).
After receiving their marching orders, they head to the south ward for an unexpected visit to Waterdeep’s Home for the Disenfranchised. At the front door of Crawford’s childhood home, they meet the old caretaker of the orphanage, Gareth. She leads them inside and sends Crawford to retrieve the wards of the house. The four boys, Igi, Doran, Helah, and Rif, were playing a game of Guards and Mercs when interrupted. Kalisius then asks to meet the boys and attempts to adopt some. The paperwork was filled out, and he and Crawford took Rif out to get some food for the group.
