Here are a couple of the more compelling motivations that I found online when researching how to play The Black Spider in my campaign. As written, he's a pretty bland and generic villain, but that doesn't need to be the case. Even if you don't tell your players directly what his motivations are, having it in the back of your mind can let you know how he'll react to the adventurers and what he'll do when they foil his plans (assuming they don't kill him).
