D&D is a great format for TTRPG's. But when you look at streams and live play categories for games, it's hard to fit D&D in there. As a DM, I can't even hope to keep up with a chat room while running the game. and honestly, I don't really want my players to either. So, how can we have live community engagement when playing the game takes all of our attention?
That's the idea behind ShortRest on Twitch. - Community D&D
We're starting with our D&D streams every Tuesday at 7pm (California). We will expand to other games and days as we go forward. First Tuesday of the month is the game itself. Every other Tuesday is community time where we discuss and shape the game world, react and plan for what the players might do (or did last session) and help each other build our own worlds and share ideas, defeating writers block as a community. There are already a lot of great "How to be a great GM" or "How to play D&D" videos out there, but I hope having this live interactive moment on a regular basis will be helpful for the community.
Honestly, right now, it's just a live game with talk shows in-between, but we're just starting out and interaction takes viewership and participation. Come hang out and chat about D&D if this is something you want to help push for in the D&D community, or you just like talking about D&D and want more chances to do so. We're on discord and twitch while streaming, and discord throughout the week. I will be posting maps and guides and worksheets, etc that will always be available for anyone to use.
The riff so far: Beginnings! Our quintet has tracked down the last known location of a group of archaeologists who sought a magical artifact. Each of our members has a different motivation for finding this source of power, but in this case, the stars (or motivations really) have aligned. Our adventure will begin in Dalledale, a large town/small city which grew form its advantageous position in one of the few central-continental mountain passes, connecting the forested lands to the east with the deserts and lowlands to the west. It is here that our adventurers believe was the last piece of civilization to come into contact with the missing archaeologists. It's been several years, and nobody has heard from them since leaving this town. Is this the end of the line? They have exhausted research options at this point, but someone (or someones) in this town was the last to come into contact with those archaeologists. The answers must be here!
The party has latched onto a lead. Having recruited the bard, Kaimana, the party headed off from the Spatz estate to seek out prominent members of the cartographers guild, Jacob Edmondson and Edmond Jacobson. The brothers cartographers knew of the old lost adventuring group and were more than willing to sell the troupe a map of the location they were seeking. Now, with map in hand, our party was ready to leave the city and trek into the hills. However, prior engagements held them back. The bard had been contracted to play for the fights and patrons at Bloody Flagon. Appearing there, the party discovers that lore master and bard troupe manager Kuth Knar has secrets to share. In light of his experiences and knowledge of their end goal, he urged the party to abandon their quest. They declined. In an effort to further convince them, he offered secrets that might change their mind. But one does not talk of these secrets in a public place, and so he asked them to meet when the night had ended. All agreed. To bide time while the bards completed their show, Declan an Thision decided to try their luck in the fighting ring. Declan traded blows in a straightforward match of might and endurance, and Thision displayed his race's natural ability to his advantage with a carefully planned acid attack, defeating his opponent via terrified surrender. And so, both reigned victorious and managed to trade some hit points for coin. The rest of the party also fared well as they won bets on their comrades fights, from the relative safety of their ringside tables.
Now, the night has come to an end, and it's time to meet up with the Half-Orc bard and lore master, Kuth Knar.
