Keen learns that the Eternal Court of the Fey has charged him with his final test for becoming a full Eldritch Knight. He must go to an island in the north and defeat the monsters there, and his trials will include being tested by magic, sword and conscience. If he succeeds he will be celebrated and raised in the ranks, but failure will mean being cast out. This means going against Killian’s orders, but the Heroes are willing to face that threat to help their friend. However they do take some time to visit a local jeweler to stock up on diamonds for Revivify, and Alyndra does some research using her background in anthropology to learn about the area. The northern island is considered haunted, a place of death where some great evil has lived for thousands of years.
The Heroes are approached by a handsome paladin, Anstis, who recognizes the group. He is both flattering as well as condescending, and brags about being a legendary hero. Alyndra is smitten but Briv is annoyed. Anstis is asking for help with an issue to the south, where an island is overrun with creatures who have broken out of the Underworld and must be destroyed. But when informed they are helping Keen with his test, he offers to come along and help them first and offers to sail them north on his boat. Most of the town seems to recognize him as a famous hero from a variety of stories and are happy to see him, so the group agrees to let him join them. After stocking up on magic arrows, getting some food and drink, and Orkira sending messages to keep in contact with some friends, they settle in for a long rest. Keen has a dream of Avren submerged in water being attacked by a strange beast as he falls towards a blue light. Everyone is worried about what that vision might mean, so Alyndra tries to scry on her father, but mostly sees static and the blue light.
The next day the Heroes and Anstis sail north through the fog to arrive at the fabled island. The rocky beach is covered with statues, the petrified remains of hundreds of previous adventurers. A voice calls out to Keen, knowing his name and announcing they are about to die!
