Hi everyone! Fire and Forge is a 4 part mini-series focusing on Alyndra, Penelope and Orkira. It will close out our show Beyond Heroes and explain how those three characters join the rest of the crew at Silver and Steel. I'll be posting episode summaries here for those that want to catch up on previous shows.
In a cheerful tavern nestled in Fallcrest in the Nentir Vale, three wary friends are being celebrated as returning heroes. After being trapped in Ravenloft in the Shadowfell, Avren made a deal to get the Heroes released, and while Briv returned to his family and Keen went back to the Feywild, the other three have found themselves returned to the place they first met many long years ago. Alyndra, Penelope, and Orkira have been trying to enjoy some quiet time without any pressing issues, but are struggling with recovering from years of constant battles to protect each other and the universe. A plan for a vacation is formed; visit the gold tree, visit the tree ents Alyndra and Penelope wanted to meet, go to the plane of Ice Cream and Milkshakes, make a dessert lasagna, and then visit Orkira’s friends in Waterdeep. Alyndra takes some time to deliver books she has from the Rexxentrum to the local library so others can learn, and then the trio head to bed for a long rest, where they get a good 10 hours of peaceful sleep without being bothered or filled with nightmares.
The next morning Walton has found a couple of horses, including a unicorn for Penelope to ride. But when they arrive at the silver mine they find a gigantic hole in the ground where the gold tree should be. It’s surrounded by the burnt symbol of an ouroboros, and at the bottom in the center is a tiny golden portal. Alyndra uses her arcane eye to go into the portal, they find it leads to the future plane Avren and Sofieus have with their tree surrounded by the dead Gods, and knowing they shouldn’t go through Penelope casts dispel magic to close it. Alyndra buries an Avren coin in the dirt, and mixing her magic with Penelope they create a new gold tree. Suddenly the tree shimmers as if turning to glass and Alyndra is suddenly transported to the past, just outside the moment the battle with Ruin began in the town many years ago. She’s attacked by a githyanki warrior, and manages to banish him as Orkira and Penelope manage to drag her back to the present just as she releases the banishment and the warrior is killed by a flying rock.
Figuring there is nothing more to be done, the trio try to resume their vacation, but Penelope spots a column of dark smoke rising from Fallcrest. They quickly fly back to find gnolls and undead ravaging the town, kidnapping townsfolk and pulling them through a portal. As Alyndra closes the portal, Orkira notices Killian sitting nearby. He tries to Power Word Kill Orkira, but Alyndra is able to counterspell him as the dragonborn engages him in a frantic and angry battle. The trio are able to destroy the simulacrum, and when Orkira casts Sending to yell at the real Killian he replies that he just needed people and figured her hometown was a good place. Alyndra is able to scry on Killian and finds that he and several others are at the ancient time machine, making strange alterations. The townsfolk say that Killian said he needed souls to make the machine work, to destroy and restart everything.
Suddenly a shadow is cast over the entire town as the floating city of Stormherald appears, being driven by Widdle the gnome! She’s recovered and fixed the castle, and heard that they might need it. So the group begin to plan how to find Killian and save the universe!
Quotes from this episode:
“I don’t know if I know how to vacation. I’ve heard the term. Are we supposed to vacation now?” - Orkira
“There’s a horrible monster in the kitchen!” "Yeah!” “Yeah?!” “I mean Yeah let’s go?” “Also my instinct is Yeah, is that wrong?” - Chef, Penelope, Orkira, and Alyndra
Desert Lasagna!
“Either we will do the things we are supposed to do, or we won’t and we’ll all just disappear from existence. Either way we can’t know, so vacation” - Orkira
“He said that he was going to liberate everyone, that everything was going to start anew.” - Townsfolk
A few days have passed on Stormherald as the group has been doing research to figure out how to find the time machine and stop Killian. They know Sofieus and Avren helped build it, but it was hidden away and should be impossible to find or locate. As Alyndra reads through the library for clues, Penelope ends up distracted in the library by a fascinating tome, bringing it to Alyndra only to discover it’s the Book of Vile Darkness by Vecna. This causes changes in Penelope; she grows horns, her eyes turn black, and her teeth fall out. Fortunately she casts Greater Restoration on herself, and later Alyndra convinces her to do a good deed by offering some healing, and mostly recovers from her brief exposure.
Orkira casts planar ally to summon a Ki-Rin named Nathanial, hoping it can teleport them where they need to go. They describe the situation and location as best as they can, and Nathanial promises to try and teleport them as close as possible. But he warns that they might end up nearby and to be prepared so the group prepares a number of spells; Orkira casts death ward on everyone, Alyndra sets up the telepathic bond and water breathing, and all of them turn invisible. Nathaniel casts plane shift and the three disappear, only to appear in an inn in Sigil owned by Avren. They find their old friends Boom Boom and Rarv in the back running the kitchen serving surplus meat from leftover Avren clones. Everyone is horrified, and threatens Rarv with burning the restaurant down if he doesn’t help find the time machine. Rarv gives in, informing them that Avren pulled the part of his brain out that had the information and created a new being, Vordrid, then hid him away in the bag world that the Heroes were previously trapped in.
The group take the bag and head back to Alyndra’s old room in Sigil, where they hold open the bag and Penelope reaches in to pull out Vordrid. Unfortunately the time difference causes Penelope’s right hand to age and turn to just bone! Vordrid agrees to tell them where the time machine is, but only after the three promise that they will get him a castle. Pulling out the Throne card she received from the Deck of Many Things, Penelope offers the castle she gained from pulling it. Vordrid agrees, and hands over a special bag of holding created just to hold the room with the time machine. Taking the signed card, Vordrid is transported to Ravenloft, now owner of Penelope’s former castle but trapped in the Domains of Dread.
Orkira suggests they simply dump the contents of the bag out over a pit of lava on the elemental plane of fire, or using some other destructive force to annihilate the time machine and Killian in one quick moment. As the group contemplates how to find a way to such a place, Alyndra scrys into Avren’s vault to see what magic items might be available. Among a lot of horrible objects, she can see the Staff of Magus, and knowing how that much power will help in their mission she uses a dimension door to go in and take the staff and return to her friends. The staff alters her eyes, making them appear as hourglasses, and everywhere she looks she can see the ravages of time destroy everything. But it does allow her to open a portal to the plane of Fire, and there they find a pool of lava large enough for their needs. They open the bag and turn it upside down, dumping the time machine and all of the dark wizards, including Killian, out into the lava where they are quickly destroyed and consumed. To make sure, Orkira scrys on Killian, finding he’s now a worm crawling across Avernus.
There’s an awkward moment as the trio are unsure what to do next, as it appears that they’ve finally stopped Killian and saved the universe. Then Alyndra uses her new staff to create a portal to the plane of ice cream and milkshakes so the Heroes can finally enjoy a rest and some dessert lasagna. With the promise of working to fix Penelope’s arm the next day, they enjoy a fun time and a long rest.
But not before a shared vision of destruction at the hands of a teenage Avren haunts them all...
Quotes from this episode:
“There were priorities. Figure out how to get it working, figure out how to save the universe, and THEN throw pillows.” - Orkira
“Shake the bag! Shake the bag!” - Penelope
“I’ll file that away for future trauma.” -Orkira
“You have summoned the great wizard! The savior of all editions! What is this strange world that I find myself in?” “The next edition that you’re going to save.” - Vordrid and Orkira
“To Vordrid, love Penelope!” - Penelope
“A lot has happened. There’s a new domain in Ravenloft. You have destroyed a microdimension and a time machine. Penelope has horns and a skeleton hand. Killian has died. And now you’re on the plane of milkshakes and ice cream.” “Wednesday.” - Todd and Jen
Sending conversation between Avren and Orkira during Silver and Steel Ep 16:
“How ya doing? So I need you to Raise Dead something that's very important to Sofieus. His name's Sir Biswilot, he's a hero, I would be in your debt if you would bring it back to life.” “Yeah, sure, ok! As soon as I finish this ice cream. Where are you?” “Well, that's a long story but you're gonna find out! “You're gonna have to give me more than that.” “Oh I'm also with Freely, he's doing great.” “That's good to know! If you can give me details ...tell Alyndra! She's got this staff that can just take us places, so we can probably just get to you.” “Ok concerning…” “And her eyes do turn weird...I don't know...OH SPRINKLES!"
The group enjoy some delicious treats in the plane of Ice Cream and Milkshakes. Orkira relays that she got a sending from Avren asking for help reviving a hero named Sir Bsswalot, and while she wants to help they don’t yet know where he is. They want to fix Penelope’s skeleton hand first, and as they discuss options for how to heal her hand they are suddenly attacked by the black armored figure of Lord Soth! The three are gravely injured by his attacks, but they manage to suck him into the Astral Plane when Alyndra puts a bag of holding inside a portable hole and Penelope creates a tidal wave of ice cream to knock him prone and into the portal!
Worried that Soth might be able to escape the Astral Plane, Orkira gives everyone a death ward and the group decide to leave. Alyndra uses her staff to open a portal to Waterdeep, where Orkira knows some of the priests at the temple to Oghma there who might be able to fix Penelope’s hand. However something goes wrong in transit, the staff shudders and cracks, and instead of Faerun the trio end up in Avernus! A swarm of demons, devils, and madcaps rush for them, so Orkira casts word of recall and transports them to the safehouse in Hupperdook. For a moment they are tricked into thinking that instead of transporting to Wildemount, the safehouse was moved to Avernus, but quickly they figure out that some of the moths from Ravenloft have actually infected the house and have caused a large illusion. Penelope dispels the magic and Orkira kills the moths, and everyone is relieved to find they really did safely arrive in Hupperdook.
Exhausted both mentally and physically, Alyndra sets up the tiny hut and the three try to get a long rest. Orkira takes a few moments to pray to the Phoenix, admitting she feels responsible for Penelope’s hand being damaged as she was too afraid to put her own hand in the bag. While her God does not answer her request for divine intervention, there is a sudden knock on the door as Rend arrives! He was sent by Avren to get the staff back from Alyndra, and is happy to help fix Penelope’s hand. He opens a secret door in the wall to reveal a room full of synthetic body parts, and fits her with a perfect match.
Rend relays that Avren and Sofieus wanted to retire and went off somewhere simple to relax, and then asks for help opening a strange door inside his factory. There’s a large obsidian circular door that was delivered to one of Avren’s secret factories where his coins are minted. No one knows what is behind the door, and the shipping manifest indicates it needs to be activated with divine and arcane magic. The trio realize this is the same awful door to the Abyss that they encountered before, and quickly refuse to open it. After warning everyone about the door the group leave to join the festivities in Hupperdook! Alyndra and Penelope enjoy the battle bots, while Orkira flies down a row of shots setting them all on fire. The dragonborn and halfling get very intoxicated, and have fun drunkenly racing each other before smashing through a window back in the factory and healing each other with cure wounds.
The next morning, after a round of lesser restorations to cure the hangovers, the group resume trying to help Avren with Sir Bsswalot. After using sending to get some details, Rend arrives to collect the staff. The trio take a moment to impress how important it is for Rend to deliver the staff directly to the vault, and after confirming that he is telling the truth and promises to be extra careful with it, they give him the staff. The warforged shows them where the teleportation circle is that is supposed to lead to Avren’s vacation home, and bids them all farewell. Despite the feeling that something awful is going to happen, the trio activate the circle and teleport away.
Back in the factory, Rend gets distracted helping the gnomes and rests the staff up against the dark portal to the Abyss...which slowly starts to open...
