I am creating a rather manipulative Tiefling of Fierna (+1 WIS and +2CHA ) Knowledge Cleric (her goddess is a homebrew goddess of Intrigue and Indulgence) for an upcoming campaign. I'm prioritizing WIS, CON, and CHA since she will be a pure WIS build. My dilemma is that the DM let us roll 2 sets of stats and we could choose which to use. I would really like ANY feedback... what you would do with these stats or pros and cons of both.
12,14,16,15,15,16 and 8,18,17,15,13,10
This is what I am contemplating doing with either stat and how I would go about using my first 2 ASI's. On one hand, I hate negatives and love the more balanced set, on the other I like the two 20's by 4th level and higher saving throws as lower levels. Alternative options welcome, I'm coming to you guys cause I can't pull opinions from my fellow players and am truly stuck :( I only planned out the ASI's to try an help me decide what to take, I am fully aware that planning things like this out in advance hardly ever works because leveling is highly influenced by how the campaign is going.
Also, the campaign will be equal parts exploration, RP, and combat.
Half plate will only let you use a +2 dex mod, so you'll want to end up with 14 dex sooner or later. If you're a knowledge cleric, you're probably going to want a higher intelligence to take full advantage of those proficiencies you're getting and your character theme, at least 16 if not higher. Knowledge of the Ages is going to let you use diverse skills, so it would make sense to spread your stats around rather than min max, making me lean towards the first rolled set. Keen Mind seems like it would fit the theme of your class, though Observant might match the "intrigue" angle of your specific character a little better to let you read lips at cocktail parties from across the room, so it would be nice to have room to take one or both feats at some point. And that second stat array, while it gets you to 20 cha and wis faster, causes you to dump intelligence to 10... which just doesn't seem to fit the character's theme.
I'd suggest the first well-rounded stat array, and arrange it like this:
Str: 12
Dex: 14
Con: 15 (eventually take resilient (con) at 12 to bump to 16)
Int: 15 (16 because of tiefling)
Wis: 16 (18 with ASI at 4, 20 with ASI at 8)
Cha: 16 (18 because of tiefling)
That leaves you two feats/ASI's to play with endgame... either picking up warcaster and an ASI to bump charisma or Constutitution up one more tier, or to take two ASI's, or to take Keen Mind and Observant. Also, your stats are well rounded enough that you can multiclass into anything that doesn't require 13 strength (anything but Barbarian, Fighter, or Paladin)
OMGoodness thank you! I loved the observant idea and you are the first person to offer any constructive criticism and take my character into account thank you sooo much. How would you arrange the stats for a Tiefling of Fierna? (+1 WIS and +2CHA )
Ah, didn't realize that gave +1 wisdom instead of intelligence. You could just swamp the 15 int and 16 wisdom at level 1, and then follow the same path I laid out, that would be easy enough.
That 17 and 18 are mighty tempting, but like a previous poster said, it would be at the sacrifice of STR and INT. If you don't mind sacrificing DEX for a little while, though, 8,13,17,10,19,17 (this includes your bonus) may benefit you, if you're willing to forgo feats for ASI. By level 8 your stats could be 8,14,18,10,20,18 if you so wanted. Missing out on 1 AC sucks, but if you're planning on attacking from range and have a shield, it likely won't be too bad.
However, I'd say it depends on how well you want to round out your skills or if you plan on playing support. The build Chicken_Champ suggested with the first array is great especially if you want to play heavily into the "knowledge" part of your domain. I would definitely focus on WIS and CON just so fights aren't too frustrating, but overall I'd say to choose what seems more fun over min/maxing.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
