Hi everyone, I'm a complete beginner at any kind of roleplay but me and a few friends are interested in trying some fantasy oriented one.
An online version would be simpler for us I think. I've already checked Roll20 and D&D Beyond though but I'm struggling with the "campaign" part, im looking for something simple to begin with, maybe an adventure ready to play with only the characters to prepare if that exist https://routerlogin.uno/https://192168ll.link/?
I have almost no idea about how D&D works but its the kind of universe that interest me. I know that you gotta create your character sheet, have a game master, roll dices and buy expensive books to get the stories xd.
Any help, tips, recommendations for roleplay beginners is welcome.
Look up 'free D&D one shots' on the net. There are a bunch of free short missions for newer players.
Also check your local gaming shops. Sometimes players and DM,s will post a note there looking for players or Dm,s. Someone experienced could help out a lot.
5e has several "Starter Sets" which contain a short adventure and pre-made characters, a set of dice, and often a map, that are pretty much exactly what you're looking for. It's not the full rules, but it's enough to get you started.
Barring that, you can build characters on D&D beyond without spending any money, though your options are even more limited than what's in the Players' Handbook, and as others have said, there are numerous free one-shots online that you could download and run for your party (just make sure the source is trustworthy).
Another option might be to find out what gaming store is closest to you and your friends, and post on their bulletin board that you have a beginner party looking for a DM to run a one-shot. Assuming you get a decent DM, that gives you a well-informed guide to help you understand the game, without you having to buy a lot of things.
At some point though, if you're going to be the DM, you need to read through the Dungeon Master's Guide (this has a lot of the rules, and the majority of the magic items), Player's Handbook (this has the majority of the player options and more rules), and Monster Manual (these are the creatures your party will be encountering in the world, so you don't have to come up with stats for all of them on your own and try to balance them). Preferably you'd own them, but borrowed copies still get the information into your head. One of the local game stores near me actually has copies of several D&D books available for players to read (similar to how game stores often have some open demo-games for people to play to see if they're interested).

I think there's a free adventure available here too - just check the Sources menu for Adventures.
