I'm currently playing a ranger beastmaster (using TCoE, I'm fighting with a bow). I'm thinking about multiclassing into rogue after level 5. I'm especially intersted in the scout subclass because it would be so thematic and interesting. My questions are
Is it worthwhile to multiclass at all, and if so, how many levels? (I'm considering 1, 3 or 4). The clear downsides I can see are worse spellcasting, my companion having less HP, and potentially one less ASI.
How does taking the skill expert feat fare against dipping into rogue?
as far as I know the best dip duration is two levels with paladin/ranger spells, caster subclasses, wildshape, eldritch invocation, action surge and alike.rogue gets the actions to become bonus actions.I would play original, to gain a good action economy and a good sneaky pet.add favored enemy form level 6 beast(only works with vanilla) if you don’t have it already and you become an unfailable scout and stealth role, never take more than three levels when multiclassing with main ranger, because from that point on you lose the spell levels.rogue is worth more than a feat, but multiclassing druid is maybe even more viable, but I would say go for it
You do point out that your beast companion would suffer for it, but if you were to multiclass, I'd say at least continue two more levels in ranger so you get your 6th level feature improvement (whether you took from the PHB or from Tasha's) as well as your 7th level subclass feature which helps your beast companion out. You could do that first and then multiclass or begin to dip and come back to push those two levels out.
As for Rogue, if you were to dip into it, 1 level of course gets you some things, but going up to 3rd level I think would provide more worthwhile features for you with that improved Sneak Attack, Cunning Action, and the Rogue subclass. Whether you go further with it is up to you as you could get that 4th level ASI or keep that level for your Ranger line.
This is at least if your focus is on a Ranger/Rogue multiclass build.
Taking Skill Expert is probably better than a 1 level dip into rogue, 1d6 extra damage per round isn't all that much vs slowing down your beastmaster progression.
3 levels of rogue could get you a ton of utility with Arcane Trickster and doesn't slow down your spell progression so badly and gives you a big boost in diversity of spells you can cast.
But a 4th level in rogue isn't getting you much except that ASI/Feat which if you are desperate for it you'd be better off not MCing.
