Currently playing a tabaxi rogue, and looking to multi class into a Battle Master fighter later on but unsure of a few things. Firstly, we decided our stats by playing a prologue of our characters (all stats were 10 + any racial bonus) and we gained stats from our actions, so rogue’s strength is 16 while dex is only 14. I’ve been using strength for finesse weapons, but I was probably going to start levelling up dex for the other non-damage dealing benefits.
We’re currently level 2 so we haven’t picked our subclasses yet, and I wasn’t sure if I should go into Soulknife or Arcane trickster. My intelligence is -1, so any spells would just be buffs, but that’s not exactly weak. Do these classes mesh well with Battle Master?
Not sure if I want to put more levels into fighter or rogue, but for now my dm suggested level 3 rogue, then level 2 fighter, and then get to at least level 5 rogue before any more fighter advancement. Any advice of a build? Is it worth to multiclass? Any other multiclass suggestions other than fighter? For reference:
Soulknife or Arcane Trickster would both be fine, but If I may make another suggestion, the Swashbuckler Rogue is fantastic, because the additional ways to get Sneak Attack without having to sneak at all ensures you get to deal your Sneak Attack damage virtually every turn. You wouldn't be making use of its Charisma-features, but I believe the improved Sneak Attack more than makes up for it.
I would take 4 levels of Rogue to get your first ASI, then 5 Fighter for Action Surge, your second ASI, and your Extra Attack, Then from there, I'd go with Rogue for the rest of the levels to maximize that Sneak Attack every turn, and capitalize on the rest of the Rogue's excellent features.
