I have a question or I need an idea. My character died in our last session and I'm currently creating a new one.
Since I have never played something shady, I really want to give it a try. But I don't have a great character idea. For the race I thought about a tiefling or changeling. But i don't really know what class. I am not really good at spellcaster (multiclass at a low level would be ok) however, we already have a paladin, a barbarian and a rogue. My idea would be something like ranger or so and a multiclass into a college of whisper bard. More for the flair of the shadiness...
And all my characters have a really stupid flaw which I like to keep (e.g. one barbarian geht's distracted by flowers and makes floral wreaths, or is colour blind but does not "know", or the ranger is very naive and can't stand still so she rushes forward without thinking, etc)
Race: Tiefing, Background: Charlatan, Class: Warlock, Subclass: ArchFey (Pact: Chain, Core Invocations: Mask of Many Faces, Misty Visions), Flaw: Braggart - whenever asked about themselves they will lie & exaggerate the truth.
Race: Changeling, Background: Urchin, Class: Rogue, Subclass: Swashbuckler + 3-5 levels of Eloquence Bard, Flaw: Haggler - you want to keep what money you have and get more of it at any opportunity, you always haggle for the best deal when shopping or negotiating payment.
"Assassin"-esque Shady Characters:
Race: Changeling, Background: Criminal, Class: Ranger, Subclass: Gloomstalker, Flaw: Killer Instinct - you can't help yourself but always be thinking about how to kill any stranger you meet, be that looking for backdoors or shady corners you could trick them through to stab them in the back, or chandeliers you could 'accidentally' drop on their heads.
Race: Tiefling, Background: Outlander, Class: Ranger, Subclass: Hunter, Flaw: Socially Awkward - animals and plants are simple, you understand them. People are hard and complicated, you can't figure them out and always seem to end up saying the wrong thing.
Shady is more of a personality choice, to my mind. Some classes might be an easier fit into that personality, but there’s no reason you couldn’t have a shady paladin, for example.
Devil Hunter - Race: Tiefling, Background: Haunted One, Class: Paladin, Subclass: Vengeance This is a Dexterity + Charisma based Paladin that primarily uses a bow / crossbow. Use your spellslots for Hellish Rebuke (from Tiefling) as well as Hunter's Mark, Misty Step or Divine Favour. Once you hit 5th level and have Extra Attack and 2nd level spells, swap to Fighter to pick up Action Surge + Archery Fighting Style. Then either go Battlemaster or return to Paladin depending which you enjoy more. Story (optional): You're mother was fooled by a sweet talking devil, and is trapped in his infernal contract unless you can hunt him down & kill him. Flaw/Quirk: you are paranoid about signing deals with anyone, and are obsessed with killing any/all devils.
Card Shark - Race: either Tiefling or Changeling, Background: Gambler, Class: Warlock, Subclass: Great Old One (Pact: Tome). Optional: MC 3-Bard (Glamour). Reflavour your Eldritch Blast as magical cards that you throw at the enemy. Flaw: You can't so no to a bet or wager.
Bouncer - Race: Changeling. Background: Soldier, Class: Fighter, Subclass: Rune Knight. Take the Unarmed Fighting Style, and pick up the Tavern Brawler feat. Flaw: loves cute cuddly animals like kittens, puppies, mice, etc...

Hey guys,
I have a question or I need an idea.
Do you have and ideas?
What do you mean when you say "shady?"
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
