I'm thinking of trying to build a Goblin character without purchasing the Monsters of the Multiverse book. Any tips for retooling a free on Beyond race into a Goblin race? Like which would need the least changes to make it playable, if not literally the same thing, if possible. Thank you!
(I'm considering Human or Halfling, but I'm not sure how easy it would be)
Goblins are most well known for avoiding or getting out of combat. You could start with halfling and replace lucky and brave (goblins are known to be cowards) with something that helps them escape from enemies.
DnD beyond used to allow to to purchase an individual race/species for a couple of dollars it is a pity they have stopped that.
Halflings are fairly similar to Goblins in size and general vibe (stealthy, funky little guys) so I'd start with one of those. See if your GM will let you replace the Halfling's Brave trait with the Elf's Fey Ancestry (they're extremely similar traits so there shouldn't be any balance concerns, but please abide your DM's decision). If your DM is particularly amenable to customization, you can also ask if you can swap out the Halfling's Luck trait for the Elf's Darkvision and Keen Senses traits. This would all leave you with a small, stealthy fey with keen senses; that's close to a Goblin, even if it lacks their more iconic game features.
