I'm working on a Lupin Monk. Eventually, I will go with Warrior of the Open Hand.
I have narrowed the background to two options: Sailor and Wayfarer.
I picked Sailor for the Tavern Brawler feat, meaning more reliable damage (even though Monks get a d6 unarmed strike instead of a d4, rerolling 1s is still good) and another free Shove if the free Shove from Feral Pounce doesn't knock the other guy down.
I picked Wayfarer for Luck dice to supplement the Howl ability, meaning more disadvantage to lock down targets.
The skills and ability scores are a wash. I'll be taking Dex +1 and Wis +2 either way. Wayfarer gets Insight and Stealth, and Sailor gets Acrobatics and Perception. All of those skills can be covered in other parts of the build (Class, Species).
So, which Feat, and therefore the governing Background, is better for this build? I could go either way, so I'm looking for something a bit more definitive.
its kinda like the old lizardfolk race where almost no characer can ideally make use of the both main features. Monks like the free shove but howl is terrible for them. And classes that like the howl dont use unarmed strikes.
I have an idea for a barbarian 1/Fighter X, STR based dual wielder. At level 6, you make your first attack with an unarmed strike to try and shove the enemy and also deal some damage, your unarmed striker loses 2.5 damage compared to your normal 1d6 weapons so its not too bad. And since the character isnt awfully MAD like a monk and doesnt rely on bonus actions as much, so howl will still be useful.
You can also just ignore the unarmed strike feature because howl alone is good enough to pick the species.

Using Howl to make the Shove at Disadvantage seems pretty good.
