Hey fam, need some help with my Bard. I usually play melee types so this is my first with a Bard or really any type of main spell caster. I want to incorporate some RP into combat segments with this Bard, and that is what I need help with. Here's come info on the Bard.
Half Elf
Female
College of Whispers
Level 4
Her name is Nindrid Moonwhisper
Setting: Homebrew world with mix of Steampunk/cyberpunk/western/classic D&D.... there's things like trains and airships and even a few guns.
Group composition: Fighter, Rogue, Sorcerer, Bard (me)
Gear: Dagger, hand cross bow, small guitar (advanced lute) strapped and secure across chest/tummy, and spells.
Spells: Blade Ward, Minor Illusion, Vicious Mockery, Disguise Self, Healing Word, Bane, Dissonant Whispers, Shatter, Enhance Ability, Invisibility
Mainly I'm looking for stuff I can do during combat that will add flavor instead of the usual.. "I cast Bane."
So far I have a few things like...
*singing lyrics* "You've been, you've been THUNDERSTRUCK!"" While casting Shatter (it does Thunder damage).
Me saying "Roses are red, violets are blue, a face like yours belongs in a zoo" while casting Vicious Mockery.
*Imitating DC villain Bane's funny sounding voice from the Dark Knight Rises movie, in a sing-song type voice*... "The Name's Bane. Ask me again and I'll tell ya the same. It's BANE!"... then casting the Bane spell.
*singing in whispered tone song lyrics*... "Baby, baby, baby (Justin Bieber, lol)....or.... "Never gonna give you up. Never gonna let you down. (Rick Roll)" .. while casting Dissonant Whispers.
So, yeah, what are some lyrics or short one or two line witty insults I could use during combat, most specifically spells.
You could always grab some insults from Shakespeare and throw them in, there is a neat generator here that'll help with that. Good for Vicious Mockery :)
Healing word- can use any number of oneliners from overwatch of TF2
Dissonant whispers- could also be any number of annoying ear worms or internet memes. A few that come to mind are look at my horse and a song that gets on everybody's nerves.
First, I think there is a thread for "bardic songs & rhymes" in the Bard subforum already (merge? move?)
The "comedic route" is to use modern pop songs like ... "ah, ah, ah, ahhhh, staying alive" for Healing Word, but that works only for a while and if you want to play the "funny bard type"
Another way can be to stick to a foreign language (Spanish, Italian etc. with lots of vowels for melody) or even a made up language like Dothraki and High Valerian ("Valar Morgulis" for Bane) for your "voice command". Latin will work nicely too, if you want to use something with more gravitas (and it is nothing your cleric or wizard has already claimed for the spell casting)
I as a bard, would "Weird Al" a song, to fit things that happened during the campaign, and sing them in bars or as bardic inspiration. i know it doesn't help as much for your battle spells:
Title song: Questing Daily (sung to Carly Rae Jepson’s Call me maybe)
I never studied my world lore
As a result I am quite poor
We partied up to earn more
Soon we will save the day
Beginners gear and scrap
To outsiders we look like crap
Inexperienced, fell for the trap
Soon we will save the day
The goblins are yelling
Behind a rock spears were throwing
No light, fear was growing
Magic through us is flowing baby!
Hey there’s a battle, it’s a melee
But they’re evil, questing daily
We’re outnumbered greatly
But they’re evil, questing daily
Hey there’s a battle, it’s a melee
But they’re evil, questing daily
Lies and deceit, they try and fake me
But they’re evil, questing daily
We took some time to plan
We’re not gods, only man
Ready for threats we scan
Still we’ll save the day
Running into the fight
Soon they will fear our might
When done we’ll call it a night
The day is saved
The goblins are yellin’
Behind a rock spears were throwin’
No light, fear was growin’
Magic through us is flowin’ baby!
Hey there’s a battle, it’s a melee
But they’re evil, questing daily
We’re outnumbered greatly
But they’re evil, questing daily
Hey there’s a battle, it’s a melee
But they’re evil, questing daily
Lies and deceit, they try and fake me
But they’re evil, questing daily
Before you hired us
It was peaceful
It was peaceful
It was so peaceful
Before you hired us
It was peaceful
We were blissful
It was peaceful
Chaos would have spread anyway
But they’re evil, questing daily
Hey there’s a battle, it’s a melee
But they’re evil, questing daily
Lies and deceit, they try and fake me
But they’re evil, questing daily
Before you hired us
It was peaceful
It was peaceful
It was so peaceful
Before you hired us
It was peaceful
We were blissful
Questing daily
since it's hard to put them in format, I'll spare the others, but also did ones to Bad to the Bone, Smooth Criminal, Tub Thumpin, to name a few.
But overall, don't feel obligated to only use pre-existing songs and lyrics for the spells, if you can parody a song, and make it work, it can have the same effect.

"Now you see me, now you don't!" - Invisibility
"Anything you can do, I can do better!" - Enhance Ability
Canto alla vita
alla sua bellezza
ad ogni sua ferita
ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty
To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me
The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!
You could always grab some insults from Shakespeare and throw them in, there is a neat generator here that'll help with that. Good for Vicious Mockery :)
Blade ward- cant touch this
Disguise self- from mulan's reflection
Healing word- can use any number of oneliners from overwatch of TF2
Dissonant whispers- could also be any number of annoying ear worms or internet memes. A few that come to mind are look at my horse and a song that gets on everybody's nerves.
Great suggestions guys, keep them coming. Thanks for the help thus far!!!
