I just need some help with this small inability to choose a background for my newest character.
The process for the background I have in place is as follows:
"Otrovac, A new Vedalken Wizard up-start for the ***** *******. They're very first mission was to go and observe a demonstration of an Izzet experiment over in the Laboratory of Orientation. After eventually finding the ever-location-changing building they are led to the experimentation chamber. During the demonstration, something goes wrong and a burst of energy engulfs Otrovac. Nothing is left of them in the space they once occupied in Ravnica. Otrovac is thrust through the realm-between-realms until he slams into the ground in an unfamiliar place... Trees, Open Wilds... At first they think it is a Selesnyan prank... but soon they realise they are in a different land altogether. Their purpose now is to research and learn - of how to get back to Ravnica - and bring back information and studies of this strange land"
So, I am currently stuck trying to work out an appropriate background for my Vedalken wizard (I'll be going with the school of Divination). I can't seem to choose which guild He/she would hail from. I Really like the idea of an Izzet Vedalken, but does the Izzet league have a laboratory dedicated to Divination? They are a level 1 character, so I'm thinking some kind of initiate or apprentice. Another option is The Azorius Senate as a Lawmage from the Lyev Column.
Divination would be atypical for an izzet mage, but not impossible (really nothing is) as long as you can justify it. For example, maybe Otrovac created, planned on creating, or joined a recently formed divination lab. Or maybe he practiced divination to spy on other engineers.
A precognitive mage for the leyv column of the azorius would be the most vanilla choice for this race-class combo.
There is nothing wrong with fleshing out ideas in game. You decide your character has an aversion to this or that. Why? You think it might make things interesting if someone treated you wrongly in the past. Who? I don't like the color red. The possibilities are endless. To start out with come up with at least a full descriptive paragraph of a background. And then keep this in mind and play your character as such. Develop mannerisms. Create behaviours. When someone asks you "Why did you do that in that way", that is when you create more of your backstory.
You do not need to go into a game with a novel on your background, particularly if starting out at level one. You know full well that a level one character has just walked away from their life, as it were, and begun the adventure. Just get some basics and let the campaign guide the rest of the story.

Thank you. ChrisW
Ones are righteous. And one day, we just might believe it.
Maybe their "divination" is a highly technical/slapdash probability algorithm they'd toyed with as an Izzet researcher. This algorithm is like their pet passion project that none of their colleagues appreciate because it doesn't explode, but now that he's being thrust into "field research" he's learning new applications for all these probability vectors he's been working on in the back of his head.
In magic story Simic is preparing for War of the Spark with the Guardian project, maybe Simic Divination to try to find which cytoplasms could be used.

Simic could also be attempting to use divination in an effort to reduce failed experiments (read- dangerous).

Of course, you could go very off norm and choose Dimir. Divination and spying go hand in hand.
