Hey, so this is my first ever campaign and character, me and the group are just about to go to wave echo cave. I'm a rogue assassin and had an idea to forge some documents to basically inherit phandalin, the mines and surrounding area as well as the title of Lord.
I managed to pull it off but as it's been about 500 years the minee have apparently been sold off to other companies so I might have trouble getting profits or taxes from the mine companies.
Any thoughts on how to get money from these companies? Or do I just have to further the grift with more of my famous documents 😏

So much of this is just going to be RP between you, your party, and your DM. If there are complications, you'll either need to further the grift, give up, or any remove obstacles (buy out, swindle, or kill legitimate holders, though I would argue something along salvage rights. Further, Gundren or whomever he is working for would likely have figured that aspect out. If Gundren died in your campaign, forge something that says he left it to the party, perhaps with a portion set aside for whomever survived amongst the NPCs that might have a claim.)
Of course, the actual value of the mine may be nil if your DM determines that the magical properties of the forge and the value of any remaining ore/ gems were all lost due to the explosion that caused Wave Echo Cave to become lost in the first place. As for Phandalin itself, someone is likely to have put in a claim for Lordship on the area when the town was restarted. The fact that two representatives from the Lord's Alliance have shown up supports this. Glasstaff went rogue of course, but Sildar doesn't seem like he'd be as likely to corrupt. That aspect might have to be played out, perhaps with help from Halia Thornton (for a cut, naturally).
So much of what will be necessary to figure out what will be needed is contingent on what has happened in your campaign and what additional complications might arise due to changes/additions that your DM has in his version of the world.
Since these companies have claims, you might want to try to track them down. If your claim to the surrounding areas is viewed as legitimate, you could impose taxes on the material transferred through your territory, particularly if you hire/ fund a militia to protect the area in your absence while adventuring.
You could impose taxes on the town that the town merchants would essentially pass on to the companies when they buy their goods in town. The otherwise, you may have to forge your way into inheriting the companies some how.
Then, this might be the time to add in elements of Acquisitions, Inc., if it hasn't been done yet.
All interesting points. I think my DM is looking at a large company from neverwinter being the owners and that because my family has been away for 500 years (or so they think 😂) then the land was sold by the town folk.
I have another couple of ideas on how I might get the rights.
I'll have to see about looking at acquisitions inc. and see what that has to say and how it might impact.
Maybe I'll just have to roll with what the DM comes up with and take it from there haha
Thank you.
