Was considering this multi class until I read a few threads advising that it was not optimal which I understand.
I guess the function of the character would be for him to primarily be a scout and long distance fighter/caster with a bow, but when things got a little hairy he could initiate his blade singing and use booming blade if someone gets to close. So it would be a fairly small dip into wizard for the bladesinger class but also to get wizard spells which I would reskin as spells in the form of arrows shot from my bow. Any thoughts? Could this work or still a bad idea? Would Arcane Trickster be a better multi-class to accomplish what I'm looking to do?
It not a bad idea at all. If it's fun and the DM allows you to play out the vision you have for the character, I say do it. Many people only make characters with the most mechanical advantages in mind, it's cool to see a player or DM have more in mind than that.
A lot of the Bladesinger spells are cantrips, right? You could actually pick up the Magic Initiate feat and learn the ones you like for that reason... unless of course there's a good number of Wizard spells you actually want to add to your arsenal in addition to those initial few tricks.

Bladesinger has no "unique" spells to it. Just the normal Wizard spell list and spell selection process.
