I have tried to avoid the amnesia cliche. I give him some ruthless characteristics, as well as some questionable beginnings (Like unconscious amid bodies). I don't know what alignment he would be. He fights without mercy, tortures, and has a connection to ruthless people, suggesting he was a bad guy. Sounds brutal, but, because he is surrounded by good people, he is starting to try and help people. Chaotic Neutral turning to Chaotic Good, or Chaotic Good since the beginning?
Here are the stats. Str. 12 Dex. 7 Con. 12 Int. 17 Wis. 12 Cha. 12
Torturing people pretty much automatically makes you an evil character in D&D. You have to stop doing stuff like that before you can call yourself neutral or good.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Make sure that he's named after a Renaissance-era painter or sculpter. It's a requirement for any Tortle character and any that aren't get served in a tortle soup to the party.

My DM will probably turn pale when he hears that I am playing a Neutral Evil or Chaotic Evil character!
I would suggest that the character does stuff like this to one particular race/organization, for example-
I run a human wizard (neutral) who was a professor at a school of magic, till one day a group of evil wizards destroyed it and all the students/teachers, but he survived. Now he hates anyone that’s a part of this group with a passion. He will torture/kill them without a second thought, he even goes as far as branding their faces with his bare hand (DM ruled he would use a fire spell but instead of throwing it he uses it to superheat his hand, thought it was interesting use of a fire spell), but he’s still neutral. Because the way he acts is normally very composed and tempered I would normally make him neutral good, but because he’s also willing to be evil when he needs to be a dropped him to neutral.
So what if your character only has a hate for one particular race/organization? Then maybe you could be a chaotic neutral because normally you aren’t this crazy murder-hobo. hope this help!
It covers what you're looking for pretty well I feel. As for torture... yeah that's definitely evil so you should talk to your DM before you go that route. Fighting without mercy can still be good, you're just hard.

The Boy, the Legend
I play as Yagrea the sassy monk in the Twinkling Stars Tavern!
Quott, the amnesiac Tortle Chronurgy Wizard.
Bright yellow font on a white background is intrinsically Chaotic Evil.
His magic is mostly coloured bright gold, for story reasons!

You should read the evil character article that was published not too long ago.
