So due to the corona virus my group has to play online for now and I need help figuring this out. I lack the funds to rebuy books on D&D beyond when I have the physical copies, me and my group well at least a few people in the group lack cameras on our pc’s, I can’t pay a subscription fee at this time or buy really anything since income is ****ed at this time, ect.
i tried messing with roll20 and it gave my a headache trying to figure it out sadly... any advice here on how to do this? D&D is about the only thing for us to keep distracted during this time and I don’t want to let my players down....
You can use the homebrew tools to add all the non-free content in your books (just don't publish them). And private homebrew is shared without a subscription, so 2 birds with one stone.
Some stuff is already free to use from SRD, basic rules, and EEPC, not to mention stuff not in books like UA and CR content.
Thanks, but as for running the sessions is there a program you would recommend that doesn’t require me to pay? We plan to voice chat through discord and the party likes to see where they are to enemies and that can be a pain for me to make up since half the time it feels unfair for them and with my ADHD I sometimes become inconsistent without visual aid.
Roll20 is the free to use (they have subscription for more features, but are unneeded). That is what my group used.
The only other free one I know of is maptools but it is harder to use than Roll20 and doesn't have servers for online sessions (you have to set that up yourself too).

Don't stress the cameras, there is an article up now about playing online that tells about another free alternative to roll20. With DnDBeyond, only one player has to have the subscription to share what everyone has, meaning that the costs can be spread around. The other responses are pretty good alternatives, and I'm getting ready to go discord myself.
If having everyone join Roll20 seems a bit too much and you'd like to use Discord you can use something like Pyromancers and export the maps to JPG or PNG and then just upload those to discord as you play. Just a thought :)
You could take screenshots/pictures of the virtual or real maps you use and share them with your group. Much easier to get into then Roll20, but slower and more work intensiv in the long run.
I use the app 3D Virtual Tabletop and make screenshots that i share for my PbP games here in the Forum.

Thanks also what is the alternative you mentioned? Or where can I find this article?
Probably this: http://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
DDB articles can be found on the front page.
Indeed.
Thanks everyone!
