I know there is no truly faithful or perfect way to make John on dnd. I am looking for the closest possible iterations but old school hellblazer and John post New 52.
Hmm. Full Rogue Inquisitor, but with a couple classes worth of Ritual Caster feats?
I could also see a warlock multiclass, but with a whole slew of jilted patrons in his wake as he keeps making pacts and wiggling out of them
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
I was thinking Lore bard with 3 levels or so in Fiend Warlock for Hellblazer, and Straight Divination wizard for New 52, but part of me feels like these just don't fit.
Constantine is a skilled practitioner of magic, but he doesn't rely on big, flashy spells. Rather, he seems to specialize in smaller rituals, and has an encyclopedic knowledge (or, at the very least, he knows where to look up information) about extraplanar beings and how to combat them.
With that in mind, my recommendation is Horizon Walker Ranger. A Ranger's Favored Enemy feature can be used to represent Constantine's knowledge of Fiends, which would, at higher levels, include aberrations and either monstrosities or celestials. I'd probably take Deft Explorer instead of Natural Explorer, though, since Natural Explorer feeds more into being a survivalist, while Deft Explorer can more easily be customized to fit the Constantine character. I'd probably also grab the Ritual Caster feat at some point... that way it opens up the character to having access to more potent casting when he has the time and resources to perform a ritual, while his in-the-moment spellcasting is more limited, and he's likely to rely on equipment before spellcasting.
I think warlock works well for John Constantine. Just flavor the abilities as lots of little pacts made with different magical creatures rather than one big pact as is typical. John really seems to me like a warlock who is basically always changing his subclass and invocations. Pact of the tome probably fits him best so you can get more of the spell variety that really fits Constantine.
I did this once with a ranger/lock, transmorpher is right, ranger fits extremely well, and you other guys are right, so does warlock, I would go horizon walker 10 at least, and a few levels of warlock, to represent the litany of lower magic he always seems to have prepared. Ritual caster fits as well
