Different sources may have different lore surrounding True Names, but the basic idea is this:
The Gods wanted a way to assert power over mortals, so all creatures (other than Gods) come into existence with a secret True Name that only the gods and a select few "Keepers of Names" have access to. Some True Names slip out into the world one way or another, sometimes through bribing these Keepers, or perhaps through appealing to a God directly.
i.e. Whoever is minting new souls stamps a serial number on each one, and there are a few accountants who keep track.

I'm a Total newb,
I have read conflicting information on how True Names are created. Are they assigned at birth/creation? Are True Names assigned as part of a pact?
