Talk to your DM out of character about your concerns, probably not even on game day. Maybe send an email so you can take time to revise it and phrase things just right. I could dress it up more, but basically it will come down to that.
You might want to ask about alignment, in the discussion. In this edition, mechanically, alignment means next-to-nothing. If your DM isn't going to strictly enforce alignment, then it won't really matter what you or the dragon are. If they are, try to get a handle on what the DM means when they say true neutral. To some people, that could mean actively working to keep the balance between good and evil. In others, it might mean they don't much care about any of it and will just go along with whatever. So see what's up for your campaign world.
P.S. Welcome to the game. It is super fun if you get in with the right people. So if this DM doesn't work for you, don't let it sour you on the experience as a whole.

Thanks, I was thinking it might be best to talk to him about it. I honestly really like everyone in the group, which is why I'd rather try to resolve any problems than let them fester.
As for alignment, there was one interaction the dragon had before the session ended but after the alignment shift that indicated "neutral" in this world basically means indifferent to anything beyond yourself. While obviously not a major issue in a vacuum, it's almost the opposite of what my character had been working towards.
It sounds like your DM has a plan, it's their homebrew world and they are working with you to give your character something unique and tied to the world. This could even be leading up to a big moment between your character and the dragon that will lead to an epic RP moment.
I understand your misgivings, especially if certain moments seem rushed, but as Xalthu said, if you have concerns, talk to your DM when it's not game time about your concerns. Some of the best RP and development moments for a character and a campaign come from discussions about the campaign while not during the campaign itself.
As a DM and as a player, I've gotten so many great ideas from talking to my players and DMs that have led to moments that we all enjoy and love.

First of all, welcome to D&D! :)
