Yes, Counterspell is so good many DMs outlaw the spell from the table.
I chose Thunderstep for my second spell because I wanted to be able to pull my Rogue party member out of a jam, which he was singularly capable of getting into.
There are several good 3rd level spells but they will compete for your other 3rd level + spell slots. Fireball is always fun.
I also had selected Dispel Magic as a third level spell from the Bard Spell list. so I was covered if the spell was cast or if it was about to be cast. Counterspell doesn't work on spells already functioning.
