I have been a subscriber to DnD Beyond for a long time. To put be frank, many of the balance adjustments for the 2024 content has been offputting and I have very little interest in using the 2024 classes/content. It has been said that 2024 will be backwards compatible with 2014 so players can use 2014 classes/species etc with 2024 content. But how does that apply to showcasing content in DnD Beyond?
Example, what if there are 2 separate versions of the same spell (ala Cure Wounds.) Would both version of those spells appear in the spell list, or will only the 2024 version appear?
we don't know, but we can guess. seems like the older version will have a separate listing with "Legacy" tag attached. like when you search "Adult Oblex" and get the Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse version and the legacy Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, too.
The bigger problem is going to be with spell and feature. Most likely new spells and features will overwrite the older version much like an errata. D&D Beyond might allow you access to both versions, but it’s more likely they will lock it behind a tab on the character sheet. You will probably have to remember to slide the “Legacy Spells” slider on the first page of the character creator.
There's already a "Legacy content" toggle on the race selection screen of the character builder, I imagine that concept will be expanded on and the Legacy tag will be applied to other types of character options.
With that said, they might treat the spell changes like errata. Kind of like how Mass Heal is just Evocation now, rather than there being an Evocation version and a "Legacy" Conjuration version.

That's my hope and expectation as well. Some classes, subclasses, spells, feats, etc. will have "Legacy" tags on them, the same way they currently do with Races and Monsters.
If how previous content has been edited such as Greenflame Blade and Booming Blade, the old rules will simply cease to exist. Things like old races will still show up as legacy content, but you're only going to have the new celestial warlock for example. I highly doubt that the old version of classes will be retained unless you make homebrew copies of it all. That's what I did with GFB and BB for example.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

not to derail too much, but remind me in what way green-flame blade was overwritten? the tooltip brings up swordcoast guide version which appears to be identical to the tasha's version. unless you count the update from "Range: 5ft" to "Range: self" as that which ceases to be? the spell temporarily enchants a blade, not requiring a ranged spell attack roll at any point. so that was a clarification more than a legacy tag moment, wasn't it?

unhappy at the way in which we lost individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
tell them you don't like features disappeared quietly in the night: providefeedback!

If I recall correctly there were two changes: 1) range (to prevent a confusion between the spell description vs the spell range -- I think some thought that Distant Spell would allow you to use it with Reach or Thrown melee weapons) 2) the material component changed slightly, IIRC. So as to rule out improvised weapons (but it also, as RAW, happens to rule out virtual weapons, like Shadowblade, Fireblade, and Pact blades ... but Sage Advice sort of gives an OK to overlook that issue; IIRC it's really about ruling out improvised weapons).
The point is not the changes, it's the implementation of the changes with regard to the "errata'd" content. The old version ceased to officially exist. It wasn't set aside as legacy, it was overwritten. That's how I expect they will handle these changes. Stuff like old races? Legacy content. Spells, rules and classes? I think those will officially cease to exist.

i completely disagree. the basic rules will be overwritten, sure. the basic rules are being revised. but the 2014 PHB will almost certainly still be available in whole form to anyone who previously purchased it. just like volo's guide and other legacy content. 2014 PHB results might or might not show up in Search results (i think they will), but a link that now points to the 2014 PHB table of contents will still then too point to the 2014 PHB table of contents. it's not necessary to be so pessimistic about this when backwards compatibility has been a drum they're eager to beat over and over every chance they get. for that reason i believe that if the 2024 conjuration spells are hugely different than the 2014 conjuration spells, then it'll be a legacy tag situation simply because the 2014 PHB will not be eradicated. green flame blade was corrected, not made into a completely different spell.
i may be in the minority, but i believe that it's more likely that they will discontinue digital services than it is that they will erase some of their digital services. these guys are being awfully careful not to undermine consumer confidence and nothing would erode the value of their new book digital sales like some of their previous digital books going poof into the aether. it's not kindness that i'm relying on when i say the 2014 PHB will not disappear.
While I understand what you're saying, I am saying that's not how they did it previously, and there's no reason to believe that they're going to change it up. it will be interesting to see because they DO have a history of making races into legacy content, but rules have been errata'd out.

I am o the opinion that the "general search" functions -- that is, the search bar and all the drop down menus items that specifically link to rules at the top of the pages (so "Game Rules" and Sources") will by default link directly to the 2024 rules and systems.
THe 2014 Books will still be available as Sources (legacy) and the search field will show up with Legacy tagged content from 2014, but they won't be showing legacy in the "rules" section above -- so when you click on Game Rules, then go to Classes, Spells, Races, Monsters, Feats, Backgrounds, Magic items, Vehicles, etc you will only get the 2024 versions.
If you have the 2014 books, you will still be able to access them -- but you will probably have to go through Sources to do so.
Homebrew is my question -- will they tag it as Legacy? Leave it alone? Unsure there.
EDIT: this does mean that Character Builder characters will be left alone if they exist already, but that the character builder will only show the 2024 stuff going forward unless the DM permits sharing the 2014 books -- in which case the functionality will remain the same. But the DM will have to purposefully select the 2014 books -- they won't be a default.

Doesn't backwards compatible imply one way compatibility? As in a 2024 PHB Fighter can be used to play Tyranny of Dragons, but a 2014 PHB Fighter would not be as well suited to use in a new module released later (after the 5.5e changes).

The very specific compatibility they are generally speaking to is compatibility with existing published adventures. The PHB/DMG/MM and TGE/XGE/MOTM stuff is iffy.

...also, they literally have a 'legacy content' link explaining their position. that's probably a good first place to look.
