It's been 4.5 months since the last unearthed arcana. I don't think there has been a hiatus this long since 5e started. The wait before multiverse playtest of 4 months was unusually long too. Are they phasing them out? Have I missed an announcement?

Not just UA, we haven’t gotten much as far as news for the next book either. Call of the Netherdeep releases on March 15 and we know that we are getting to two more revisited campaign setting books from previous campaigns this year (barring any major delays), yet so far we have nothing to go by except the Travelers of the Multiverse UA which could point to Spelljammer, Planescape, and/or Dark Sun (just to cover the bases regardless of how likely).

There is a monsters of the multiverse book that just released physically (digital will come later). It is basically parts of the MM, VGtM, and MToF combined with updated lore. A bunch of monsters and races have been reworked so DDB needs extra time to figure out and implement the changes.
But yeah, to my knowledge nothing from the UA was in it.
I'm hoping for planescape next. We have next to 0 5e lore for outer planes (besides hell basically).
My guess is at least one new book besides the availability of MMM as a single book will get announced after Netherdeep drops in a couple of weeks. Maybe there'll be some UA then.
Completely speculating but I think the UA dryspell will likely be followed up with a bunch of UA exploring how far WotC can push 5e into this 2024 CD WOTC Projekt D&D GOLD. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a revisit to the subclasses available to multiple classes concept we saw get tanked in Strixhaven UA. In addition, maybe a new way to do the Sorcerer core class that makes a stronger distinction between it and the Wizard doubling done on the magic from within thing that may realign the class to something that has the Wizard's spell effects but usage maybe more in line with the Barbarian's rage (it's a long shot but it would certainly be an interesting rewrite). A "Ranger Got Right" endeavor again for all those "Rangers are Underpowered" folks. None of these are things I think D&D presently "needs" but they do speak to ways of pushing the core rules while keeping it back compatible. Who knows, maybe they'll drop in some sort of revisit of the Mystic/Psion class ... which may in turn lead to some changes in the existing "psi" subclasses.
The one thing I'm sure we won't see is a Path of the Dragon Barbarian with DRAGONRAGE because the WotC D&D Design Studio enjoys my pining suffering.

Are people still complaining about the Ranger? I thought it was Monks this semester that was on the list.

I don't really plug into the aggrieved player space, but if you go to the Ranger subforum I'm almost willing to bet virtual dice that there's an active thread about "fixing" the ranger. I think the Monk mostly gets grief for being "OP" ... oh wait, I remember Monk folks got reallly made at the unarmed fighting style in Tasha's being possibly better than martial arts so maybe you're right. Both are dwarfed by the Sorcerer, whose ability to perpetually conjure complaints from the player community should be listed as a class feature.

Monks catch it from both ends - Stunning Strike is commonly considered wildly overpowered, while the rest of the monk kit is often derided as being pointlessly weak in optimancer circles. Monks are busted (while also being underpowered) when they use their ki on nothing but Stunning Strike. If they use their ki for anything else, they're just Yew-Pee and useless. other common monk complaints are that the unarmored, use-their-fists thing locks most monks out of magical armor and weapons, which comprises something like eighty-five percent of all D&D lewts, and that most everything the monk has to spend ki on, something else just gets as a free class feature.
The ranger twerks people because they don't like core class features that're situational, no matter that rangers are otherwise perfectly competent and simply designed to have a big edge in their native environs. Monks specifically twerk munchkin min-maxers and Math Wonks because Munk Math works out poorly. The class also catches heat for not being a traditional heavily armored knight or over-bearded frail wizard in a game massively over-dominated by Tolkienesque Eurofantasy aesthetics - and yes, that's a real argument people make. "Monks are bad because they don't fit, I didn't ask for this wuxia kung-fu crap in my swords and sorcery game."
So yeah. That's the basics, at least from what I've caught on the fringes of such discussions.
My only complaint about the Monk is that I would like a Strength build to be equally as viable as the standard Dexterity build, but that has far more to do with balance between stats than the class itself.
I wonder if the reason why we haven't seen a new UA in a while is due to the fact that there is nothing new to test for this year. I am sure the MMM was meant to be out sooner than May and it might be a sign that everything has been pushed back. What ever book the Travelers UA content is appearing in, might be releasing much later in the year than they had originally planned. This would push back new content testing as well right?
Good question. I don't know if production delays on physically producing the books (the main culprit in delay releases) impacts the entire product development timeline (thought one could see similar factors slowing the design aspect as well as the physical production). I also thought until recently the time space between UA and a product using that UA was wider until VRGtR and Fizbans. I think if there's a summer release besides MMM, and there's UA for it we'd be seeing it shortly after Netherdeep drops. But you're right, MMM as a single is delayed as were Strixhaven, Fizban's (I think) and the boxed set, not sure about Netherdeep; but I think if we don't see UA after Netherdeep I think we might get some rumored release lines leaked to the YouTubers and such in that timeframe.
I think I've heard talk of another starter boxed set but the "when" is entirely unclear, it's just a few blips of a hitherto unknown D&D product popping up at a rapid slide show of Hasbro new and upcoming stuff from an investor call.

Why you shouldn't start ANOTHER thread about DDB not giving away free redeems on your hardcopy book purchases.
Thinking of starting ANOTHER thread asking why Epic Boons haven't been implemented? Read this first to learn why you shouldn't!
