C'mon now guys! Another UA, ANOTHER cleric with martial weapons and heavy armor?! What's the point of playing a fighter, again? Seriously, give us something else to play as! A squishy cleric would be such a nice change of pace, a cleric whos armor is faith, what a novel concept!
Having clerics able to go toe-to-toe in melee combat, sometimes BETTER than fighters, AND able to be some of the best casters in the game, is too much. Please WotC, give us a cleric that you actually have to be careful and thoughtful with!
Better than fighters? There are clerics with extra attack? No. I mean divine strikes help with melee damage, but spells are usually better. The only fighters melee clerics can out perform even a little bit are the worst ones.
The caster clerics get potent cantrip which doesn't scale well.
The only cleric that could actually compete with the melee damage of a fighter is a war cleric, who is designed around that very thing. If the variant class features are released, you'll be able to convert any physical cleric class into a magic one by swapping out divine strike for something that strengthens spells, so, at least you won't have to wait long.

It's ok Ranger, you'll always be cool to me.. Unless druid gets another use for its wild shape charges.
I think melee clerics aren't that bad, but I don't like em much. I think clerics can easily be the strongest class in the game, but a lot of people will probably disagree. As long as they don't give an extra attack to a cleric, or attack and spell in the same turn, it should be fine, because if a cleric had those with their healing and buffs, DM's gonna be upset.
...Which UA is the op referring to? Twilight Domain? Or Class Variants?
He's referring to twilight, yes. Twilight gets HA, martial weapons, and psychic attribute divine strike. I think the difference between Twilight and other random melee clerics is that its spells actually really play into that vanguard/wall role. Other domains like say, Nature or Order, don't necessarily need to be a physical cleric class, and some, like Life, Shouldn't ever be one in my opinion.
I’ve chosen to overlook the bonus proficiencies of the Twilight cleric. I otherwise really like the domain’s flavor, features, spells, etc. I don’t envision playing it as some paladin of the last light. I read it as more of a guide or mediator between the meeting of two worlds. He doesn’t want darkness to smother the light, but doesn’t want the darkness eradicated, either. He seeks balance.
If I were to pick the 1st level bonus to replace HA and MW, I’d give it proficiency with Perception and the cantrip Dancing Lights.
I don't think the twilight cleric will go in as written, I think it will be toned down a bit.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

Jeremy Crawford even said they often overpower their Unearthed Arcanas on purpose, because it is easier for them to scale down a subclasses power, instead of increasing it.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
To be honest, the only thing that really needs toning down is the vigilant blessing, and possibly the range of the darkvision ability. Sure, a lot of the abilities are powerful, but they rely on darkness or low light to be useful, and until you get the domain capstone, everything but the channel divinity will vary in viability.

This is not the place to put this thread. DNDBeyond are not WotC and have no control over new UA content.

Also known as CrafterB and DankMemer.
Here, have some homebrew classes! Subclasses to? Why not races. Feats, feats as well. I have a lot of magic items. Lastly I got monsters, fun, fun times.

Partway through the quest for absolute truth.
I think its because so many cleric subclasses get martial weapon proficiencies? If I'm remembering right at least, they aren't UA though.
