I have a player playing as a Hexblade Warlock, and im a little confused by the class.
Is their Patron a Weapon, or a Being that created the weapon?
If their Patron is the weapon can they use it in battle? How powerful should the Weapon be if it's a Patron? I would put some curse so if he uses another blade it will hurt him. I know sentient weapons can't be stored in the pocket space.
If their Patron in not the weapon, how powerful of a weapon can they summon?
So, these questions are more about flavor. You could say the patron is the creator, or the weapon itself like black razor.
One hexblade I have used their patron as their hex weapon, but it doesn't have any mechanical meaning in actual play. You could talk to your player about these things and rule one way or another.
The weapon they summon should not be any stronger than anything normal, unless they have the improved pact weapon invocation.
The Warlock's Patron is the being you made your Pact with. You select your Patron's a name from the list, or make up your own. The most common example is "The Raven Queen" or it could be a sentient weapon like "BlackRazor".
Your Patron isn't the weapon. At first level, you can take an existing (non magical I think) weapon and make it your Pact Weapon so you can use your Charisma on hit and damage rolls. At 3rd level you can either create one out of nothing, or take one you happen to have handy (can be magical) and turn it into your Pact Weapon. There are Invocations that you can take once you have the Pact Weapon boon.
Improved Pact Weapon (no level requirement, but you have to have a Pact Weapon, so no sooner than 3rd)
Eldritch Smite at 5th level
Thirsting Blade at 5th
Lifedrinker at 12th
You could get a copy of BlackRazor and use the ritual at 3rd level to make the copy your Pact Weapon. The real BlackRazor is probably with the Raven Queen, and she's not likely to give it to you, nor would BlackRazor let her.
My latest project, a Drow Hexblade, has the Saint of Swords as his patron. She's a celestial being who takes the form of a blindfolded woman holding a silver sword and, as part of his pact, has placed her voice in his head and can see through his eyes. She's quite a conversationalist when she gets going, which he finds just as annoying as you think it'd be.
The Warlock doesn't get to use his patron as a weapon, although, as Geann says, you could take a magical weapon and say that it's your patron weapon.
At level five, taking Eldritch Smite, Improved Pact Weapon, and Thirsting Blade, your Hexblade is actually quite a dangerous fighter.

I think that's pretty much it.

As for all Warlocks the Patron is fluff.
