You could always play with the lost regalia possibility. Your Patron loses a thing (you're pact boon) that is imbued with its power, and by behaving any like-minded way to your patron is what allows you to gain levels. That may put it to close to being a paladin but I think it's close to what you're asking.
Another idea is the old broken/dead god cliché. A piece of the god's power/soul it Is held in an object maybe you're pact boon or not but that is where you get your powers.
I know I'm not assigning patron backgrounds but I think these are universal enough to fit with most any of them.
I built a hexblade once who's bound to basically a warzone, a long dead one the corpses there hold many weapons that the Warlock could use them as they see fit. The catch is, every soul that gets caught is sent to that area where they are transformed into a weapon.
Archfey: i guess some sort of force of nature. an entity that isn't really concerned with anything but the land itself. Your character may have stumbled upon this entity and took something from it that gave your character power.
Undying: could be that your character have stolen a tome (from a lich, Vampire, some primordial entity of death) with dark knowledge and rituals that prolong life.
Fiend: Maybe found an complete contract and got a loop hole to get the character into the contract but without the drawbacks
Celestial: Another character that i made, basically your character has come in possession with an Ancient Coatl feather.

Born under the watch of something from the furthest corners of the far realms.... It knows all.... it sees all... and it asks: "What is it that you want to see?"... and my answer is... ALL"
I toyed with a Celestial idea. My tiefling traveled the great road and ended up on Elysium, a plane of pure goodness. Elysium has an addictive quality, the longer you stay there the more likely you will NEVER leave. His friends had to drag him away.
But now he has strange new powers, and plans to be worthy of Elysium. One day he will return to stay.
We all met many kinds of interesting patrons... but im curious about those that seem unaware of their warlock, not by choice or by being aloof.
A good example would be the great old ones, and the realms of madness that provide the warlock power.
How would you do it with other patrons? I would love to hear your suggestions

This reminds me of the Wolf antagonist from Neverending Story, I forget his name. "I am a servant of the Nothing."

His patron is an entire plane.
