So this is for the non hexblades out there…and probably not the Arch Fey Warlocks either. But how do you all manage survivability in tiers 2 and 3 of play?
Sorcerers and Wizards get mage Armor which is +3 and +Dex Mod when unarmed as well as access to Shield, which makes a 20 or 21 AC very reachable early on
Warlocks get access to light armor…which is extremely over rated given we’d need studded armor +1 just to equal mage armor.
But okay, let’s say have studded leather +1, we have 15 or 16 AC…is that generally enough? Or do you rely on concentration options like Darkness or Shadow of Moil to keep you from being attacke?
My issue with spells like Armor of Agathy's...is it only lasts 1 hour, so during levels 6-10 when you're likely to have 3 or 4 encounters per day...and you only have 2 spell slots, it can be a bit underwhelming if you can't short rest after 2 fights or so.
I guess you can use minor illusion to create a 1/2 cover (+2 AC) or 3/4 cover (+5 AC) so that's not bad, just curious if anyone has any other suggestions
The Moderately Armored feat gives you proficiency with medium armor and shields, and gives +1 dex or str (it'll be dex on a warlock). With medium armor you only need 14 dexterity to get 19AC with half plate and shield. If you want the Shield spell you can go with the Aberrant Dragonmark feat and that gives you +1 con, a Sorcerer cantrip (cast with constitution), and a level 1 Sorcerer spell that you can use once per short rest. Take a cantrip you like (Mending isn't on the Warlock table) and the Shield spell.
Once per short rest fits in with the normal way a Warlock is played. It's effectively a third spell slot that can only be used to cast Shield

I chickened out and multi-ed with a one level dip into cleric for medium armor and a shield.
But you aren't going to get to 20 without cheating somewhere. Most likely you still won't get to AC 20.
The Warlock comes with lots of ways to get temp hp. You may need to take advantage of them, and you should probably stay off the front lines.

I just do my best to avoid melee. There aren’t that many monsters with ranged attacks so avoiding melee makes a huge difference.
I also make it a point to buy potions of healing every chance I get.
