So I’m working on a Tiefling Fiend Warlock that works as a lawyer for devils going through the city of Dis. I’m choosing mostly thematic spells, but I’m certainly not gonna turn down anything that will help me optimize. This leads me to the challenging decision between taking Soul Cage and Summon Fiend for my first Mystic Arcanum.
Both of these spells are GREAT for the theme I’m going for, and give me various cool options:
Soul Cage
Self healing! Always great, especially on a bonus action.
Query Soul and Eyes of the Dead are really good for general information gathering.
Advantage on demand.
Fun synergy with Fiendish Resilience.
Fantastic flavor for a lawyer that deals in soul contracts.
Potential opportunity to sell souls I collect to devils I summon with Infernal Calling.
Summon Fiend
For a character based around devils, more devils is literally perfect!
Basically action free damage every round after it’s cast so long as your summon is alive.
As opposed to Infernal Calling, this henchmen is totally under my control and will do anything I say.
I love both of these spells and I’m having a hell of a time trying to choose. Please let me know your thoughts!
Thematically soul cage seems to fit better. You are in the cage until you fulfil your contractual obligations.
summon fiend could be a a fiend who signed something who agreed to something but I kinda feel it’ll be hard to roleplay that in a way that makes sense.
power wise summon fiend probably wins as it’s more damage and another body. But you may not need that over the utility of soul cage
You can’t lose control of it though. You may be thinking of thinking of Infernal Calling.
Thinking of Summon Greater Demon.
"At the end of each of the demon’s turns, it makes a Charisma saving throw. The demon has disadvantage on this saving throw if you say its true name. On a failed save, the demon continues to obey you. On a successful save, your control of the demon ends for the rest of the duration, and the demon spends its turns pursuing and attacking the nearest non-demons to the best of its ability. If you stop concentrating on the spell before it reaches its full duration, an uncontrolled demon doesn’t disappear for 1d6 rounds if it still has hit points."

I think you hit the nail on the head about utility vs damage. Thanks for the input.
Summon fiend. Mo' powah, baby!
It’s certainly tempting… What self respecting man of the law wouldn’t be thrilled to have a more consistent secretary?
And if you lose control? lol
I have cruel DMs who would have it quickly go after me! ;)

Aaah yes.
