I'd say mending, it comes into play more often than you might think and has a general utility that can't easily be replicated with something mundane. Like light is zippy as you can put it on anything but carrying a torch isn't that hard.If I were going the light route I'd actually take control flames. Doubling the light coming from a bullseye lantern puts bright light out to 120 feet, dim another 120, if you don't want the cone effect 60'60' for a hooded lantern a torch is 40/40, I wish it worked on magical flames for the continual flame spell(another reason to ignore light, a few levels and you have access to that). Yeah people see you so it increases the odds people try to ambush you but not being at a disadvantage on perception checks increases your odds of not being successfully ambushed.
oh wow thanks for the detail, i hadn't thought of that. my haifling is like, capable sailor who runs on ahead and my patron is draugr, so for flavor now I'm leaning toward guidance, mending and light for my tome cantrips. we've had 1 short combat in 5 sessions so not suuuper worried there BUT our monk is the only other fella w/out darkvision. i do kinda like the flavor of light. i also realized i don't wanna worry about using presto creatively, we have a newbie as a rogue so i wanna leave them things to come up with. also light can go underwater and more easily signal, and at lvl i don't need to breathe. would you say light is like tiers below other options? it's between light and presto i think right now. thanks again!
I consider presto 90% role play, its pretty rare when cleaning etc has a effect in play. Yeah you can try to force it, but in reality its a fun role play device more than anything. I mean yeah you can make 3 marks to mark your trail to reduce the odds of getting lost in a maze or something, maybe clean up a item so the rogue can get into its gears etc. Those things do come up, but its not often and usually its just a my clothes are clean, I make my food taste good etc. Light has direct utility. So absent other things it is probably better.
But again while warlocks don't get it continual flame exists. Buy a couple in town, if you have a wizard in the party buy them the scroll in exchange for 1, a cleric they just know it so give them the component to make a few more. If you carry 6 of those you will never need light as it also works under water. I guess since you are asking about this your party is level 3, so just hit up the cleric with a couple hundred gold and have them make you 4. Light still may have some utility, you can put it places where you'd lose the continual flame which is 50 GP, though if you have mage hand that is rare.
Before taking light id check with the DM how much it costs to buy a continual flame token. Its 2nd level 50GP material how much for the service basically. I wouldn't want to take a cantrip for something I could replicate with some cash I probably am not using.

huh ok I'll see, i haven't heard that usage before. it's a magic item that gives infinite uses of continual flame (usually 50gp per cast) for I'm assuming a bit more than 50gp? searched through the app and only find tokens with feather, anchor, etc uses. are tokens a common item?

oh i got it, you mean a token like any trinket, and the flame is always on it. that's interesting. right now I'm short on coin and I'm the only caster, kinda in the wilderness. i also worry about losing gear.

Lightfoot Halfling sailor, undead warlock, support role
Practical and personable, attacks problems directly, doesn't doubt himself, doesn't think outside the box
No darkvision but 2 party members have it + I'm taking Presto as a tome cantrip w/ Guidance. Worried about my last pick 😬
Main worry, is Message too useful to pass up, even though the character would also want Mending in his daily life?
Edit: also it's not a sailing campaign and might never be, it's just my sailor background. we do have a cart tho.
Thanks so much! 🍻
If you don't have darkvision and don't plan on taking devil's sight then take light.

Still overall I'd say mending.
