So I am making my very first Warlock, and am going Hexblade as that's what people have suggested to me as a beginner. One thing I have noticed however is that when you choose Hexblade the Warlock starting equipment doesn't seem to take the fact that your now proficient in Martial Weapons, Medium Armor, and Shields into account. Is this normal, or is it something that needs to be updated??
Depending on your DM, you may be able to do starting wealth instead? Warlocks can get up to 160 gold to play around with. It could be tight, and you might have to go without some of the starting item packs, but you could possibly squeeze a focus, martial weapon, medium armour and shield in if the dice are kind
Otherwise your DM might be willing to let you tweak the starting items a little/maybe put a suit of medium armor and a martial weapon somewhere in the early game for you to find.
If you were able to get starting wealth, perhaps one martial weapon and medium armour and a shield.
Scale mail seems to be what Clerics with medium armour start with, so that's 50GP.
A shield is 10GP.
That's a total of 60GP and a non-heavy one handed martial melee weapon (i.e. one eligible for the Hex Warrior feature) ranges from 2GP for a whip, to 25GP for a rapier or scimitar.
You wouldn't be gaining any advantage by taking the medium armour + shield + martial weapon combination. You could leave pouch/focus, crossbow, two daggers, and scholar's/dungeoneer's pack as they normally are for the level 1 Warlock.
You start with 18AC from scale mail and a shield, and a D8 weapon, either a rapier or longsword. That would be significantly better than a Warlock's normal starting equipment.
Consider backgrounds which may give you more. Since you're proficient with martial weapons, something like Gladiator to start with a trident could be cool. I did that for my warlock.
Alternatively, elect to start with rolling for money. With 4d4 x 10 gp, you have an average of 100 gp to play with. You could have scale mail and a war pick for 55 gp; leaving you with 45 for clothes and an equipment pack. Just be mindful of your Strength score and how much you can carry. And while a shield is tempting, you might want a an open hand and a spellcasting focus in order to cast spells.
Thanks for the replies! I did end up talking to my DM about it. He's cool with letting me tweak the starting items that I get to include things under the Hex Warrior proficiencies. My Warlock has a background as a Soldier, so I am probably just going to go with a chain shirt and longsword. Then pick up a shield later.
everyone seems to miss the point, if he has hex warrior then the equipment selection should show that by showing martial weapons, medium armor and shield added to starting selections.

It's normal for a subclass.
Just take a spear and crossbow. You can make the spear your hex weapon, and it is the best simple melee weapon.
What Freman said unfortunately

I like a quarterstaff on a 1st level Hexblade. It does 1d8 versatile and can double as a spell focus.
Ooh, thats a good one
