New warlock here, trying to understand when I need to roll to use abilities. My understanding is:
-Invocations(eg Repelling Blast): no rolling required, they are automatic
-Cantrips against others in conflict(eg Eldritch Blast): roll + Charisma modifier +proficiency modifier against target hit number
-Spells against others in conflict (eg Arms of Hadar): roll + Charisma modifier +proficiency modifier against target hit number
-Spells in or out of conflict that target you or the environment (eg Armor of Agathys or Mage Hand): is this automatic? If not what do you roll with and what do you roll against?
Appreciate any help with this am struggling to find confirmation in the handbook?
You'll have to read the description to see whether it requires a roll. For example, some spells used against others in conflict don't require a rill to activate, such as Hex. The disadvantage on a chosen ability score on the target just happens when you cast it, and most enemies will have no option to prevent that.
(though you'll need to hit with a separate attack to get the Hex necrotic damage.)
In general, though, in D&D 5E spells or abilities that effect other people are usually three varieties:
Ones that just work on command.
Ones that require an Attack Roll, which the spellcaster typically tolls their Spellcasting Ability Modifier + Proficiency Bonus against the target's AC. On a hit, the results are as specified.
Ones that demand that the targets (or individuals in the area of effect) make a Saving Throw roll (Saving Throw Modifier for the type of Saving Throw that the description requires) against the spellcaster's Spell Save DC (typically 8 + Spellcasting Ability Modifier + Proficiency Bonus). If the Saving Throw roll fails, that individual gets the full effect; if it succeeds the effect is lessened or eliminated for that individual, as specified in the description.
Class Features, Invocations, Spells, and Cantrips can fall in any of these categories, and in some cases, more than one simultaneously.

As the power that I've found erupts freely from the ground, I will cackle from the top of the world.🎵
That’s immensely helpful, thanks
