I am currently playing a brass Dragonborn warlock in the ToD campaign. Mechanically I’m a Fiend warlock, but I thought it’d be cool to make Tiamat my matron(…)
Backstory in short: in a fit of jealousy I was hungry for powers, got them trough Tiamat, and used them to kill my opponent, now forever indebted.
We’re now 9 sessions in and I’m still really struggling with the roleplaying in this situation. Especially: how do I justify fighting her forces, while having her as my matron at the same time? (I haven’t had contact with her yet, and my fellow players don’t know who my matron is)
Note: my DM and I made a homebrew item that sends halve my money to her hoard, to justify ‘doing something back’, but in my mind this doesn’t solve the problem of fighting her forces.
The cult of the dragon believe one thing - you believe another - either that Tiamat has a different will or agenda than the cult is laying out? That by doing what they’re doing the Cult is putting their plan over Tiamat’s and it’s blasphemy?
Seconding what NycrolB suggested, but also wanted to point out that matron is not a female form of the word patron (there isn't one, she's still just your patron), it means something very different that I'm not sure a famously ill-tempered goddess would be pleased about. 😝
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.

Ohh I can work with that, thanks!
And @Haravikk thanks for the heads-up 😅 We’re not playing in English, so dodged a bullet there haha
In Descent into Avernus I have a Red Dragonborn Fiend Pact warlock with Tiamat. The justification I use is:
Within the labyrinthine system of codes, laws, and oaths that bind the devils into their rigid order in the nine hells, a number of secret loopholes and gaps exist that allow mortals to exploit the deal made by the tieflings' forefathers ages ago. And you are one who has learned to do so. Devils harbor a particular hatred for infernal pact created this way. The devils prefer worship and subservience, rather than the theft of their power. Tiamat, however, is no mere devil. In a rather chaotic twist, she found your bravado amusing (even entertaining) and has allowed the pact to remain. She even pits her own agents against you just to see what you will do with but a fraction of her power.

I can totally see conflict between the "orthodox" Tiamat cultists and the warlock. The cultists might see the warlock as a rival who should be subservient to them (how dare you circumvent the cult and connect with Tiamat directly! That's heresy!).
